I had a lovely lunch last week with a fellow lawyer who works in third sector governance. We exchanged experiences, shared ideas and there were a few “oh so that’s where X went after he left Y” and “oh, I am glad you said this and it’s not just me thinking this way”. We then drifted into the topic of how we have recently noticed that our clients are struggling to recruit the right people into governance roles, when she said – “good governance people are generally good businesspeople”. This keeps coming back to me. The ability to understand the reality of the client’s business, the impact of business decisions on governance actions and vice versa are so essential to being a good governance professional and it should be one of the primary skills we look for when recruiting into a senior governance role.
