Specialising in Photography for Outdoor Lifestyle Brands & Travel focused businesses across Scotland and beyond // Author and Educator.
Let's talk about moments. When everything just comes together and the vision in your head just merges so perfectly with the moment before you. This is possibly, possibly my favourite 'lifestyle' photo to date. The pose of the surfer just quietly speaks defiance to the pounding waves under a heavy sky and distant mountains. I need to do more of this kind of stuff again. So what’s YOUR moment in your work when everything just came together for you? _________________________________________________________ Investing in good photography is an investment in your brand, which encourages engagement and improves the visibility of your business. Is this a good location to shoot your brand? My intensive and broad knowledge of the Scottish Highlands can help find the perfect location for you. Surf Photographer's 101 As surf photographers, it takes a special skill to capture that perfect moment, but beyond the technical aspects of photography, there is a deeper lesson to be learned – one that can be applied to all areas of our lives. Just like in surfing, we must learn to go against the current and push through challenges to achieve our goals. We may face setbacks and even feel like we're drowning, but it's all part of the process. It's through these struggles that we learn to read the currents, position ourselves in the right place, and take that perfect shot. Similarly, in our business and personal lives, we must be willing to take risks and face challenges to achieve success. It's not about having the best equipment or resources, but rather about having the determination and resilience to push through obstacles and come out stronger on the other side. So next time you're out in the ocean with your disposable waterproof camera, (or in most of cases your laptop and Google Sheets) remember that the real art lies within you. It's about setting your intentions, being in the right place at the right time, and having the courage to take that shot. And when you apply this mindset to all areas of your life, you'll see the true power of the lessons learned from behind the lens. Go out there and capture those waves, but also remember to apply those lessons to your personal and professional life. Who knows, you might just catch the perfect shot and achieve your ultimate goals. Keep pushing, keep learning, and keep shooting. The possibilities are endless. Sincerely, The Brandventures team. Commercial photographer and videographer (social media content creator). inspiring positive change through storytelling in the environmental, renewable energy and regenerative agriculture sectors.
Have you ever wondered how the world looks through the eyes of a surfer at play? For this image, I wanted to capture the movement the surfer made while surfing in a local surfing contest, and that is why I broke my own shutter speed rule. I chose 1/80 sec shutter speed on a 600mm lens, which is way slower than I would normally shoot action with, especially on such a long lens (I teach my students to use 2x the focal length, so that means shooting at 1/1250 sec shutter speed with a 600mm lens), and the result is perfect.
