The day after Memorial Day, I sit here thinking about the impact of past relationships and the memories we hold of them. Memorial Day exists to honor and remember those who have served our country and each of us, giving up their own lives. Memories get formed through our experiences and the emotions we had during them. They get stored in our minds and bodies. Then those memories pop up seemingly out of nowhere. And we have a holiday that brings those memories to the forefront. Sometimes they feel good, others not so good. What if holding onto the memory is keeping you and that relationship stuck in a pattern loop? A loop of recalling the past, whether the memory is joyful or painful. Today, I sit here sitting with, experimenting with, and embracing the notion of replacing memories with love. Love for the person, their lives, and their legacies. I sit here realizing the memories I keep of past relationships is not about them, but about me. It is time for me to release the memories about them and simply love each person who has touched my life one way or another instead.
