Our birthday posts typically start with celebratory exclamations, maybe with a couple of "Woots!" and a witty self-deprecating joke. It feels wrong to do that this year. How can we celebrate in the face of seemingly insurmountable injustices on so many levels within our own communities and across the world? Because we need to talk about the good work that is happening, even if it is at a smaller scale than the change we want to see. We must change the narrative of what is happening and what is possible. We need to instill hope, in the hope of inspiring action. Facilitating Healing and Closure Through meaningful commemorations and engagements on National Sorry Day, individuals and communities affected by past injustices can find opportunities for healing, closure, and validation of their experiences. This can contribute to the restoration of dignity and well-being for survivors and our descendants. Promoting Understanding and Empathy National Sorry Day encourages people to learn about the experiences and perspectives of First Nations communities, fostering greater understanding, empathy, and solidarity. By listening to and amplifying the voices of survivors of colonial violence society can cultivate a culture of respect and compassion.
