Earlier this spring, Calgary hosted an unforgettable event—the HEROS Hockey SUPERHeros Friendship Series. It's moments like these that remind us of the true essence of sport and recreation. This video captures why it's crucial to keep sight of what sports are truly about.
Sure, I love it when our country wins medals or dominates in a sport, whether it's through the outstanding achievements of individual athletes or teams. But it's not a one-or-other equation. We must ensure that everyone has the opportunity to access and enjoy sports.
While I appreciate the calls for funding and planning for elite athletes, it's equally important to focus on the grassroots level. The foundation of sport lies at the bottom of the pyramid, where everyone can find a pathway to be active for life. The SUPERHeros weekend has taught me an invaluable lesson: it's not the athlete's job to meet the needs of the sport; rather, it's the job of the sport to meet every athlete where they are.
Let's continue to champion inclusive sports initiatives and create opportunities for all to participate, grow, and thrive. Together, we can build a future where sport is accessible to everyone, ensuring healthier, happier, and more active communities.
