#ExtremeHeat is an important issue for many Californians this week. Consider joining the listserv for OEHHA’s new California Communities Extreme Heat Scoring System (#CalHeatScore), a tool that, when developed, will help Californians stay healthy when temperatures rise by forecasting and mapping heat risk at the community level. #CalHeatScore will notify Californians to coming heat waves and connect people to locally available resources. By translating risk into recommended thresholds for action, #CalHeatScore will also be a resource in the preparation and planning for extreme heat events. We’re looking for input on #CalHeatScore. Join the #CalHeatScore listserv for updates as we continue to develop this tool and learn how to get involved ➡ bit.ly/OEHHA-SignUp

Extreme Heat: Key Lessons What have we learned from dealing with extreme heat? In an interview, Mihir R. Bhatt shares insights on data collection, early warning systems, and effective strategies for heatwave adaptation. Key Takeaways: Challenges in Data Collection: Reliable data on extreme heat events is often lacking, which hampers targeted interventions and adaptation strategies. Strengthening Early Warning Systems: Enhancing early warning systems can significantly reduce heatwave impacts, especially in vulnerable communities. Community-Centric Approaches: Collaboration with local communities and authorities is crucial for building heat resilience. To dive deeper into these lessons, check out the full article linked in the comments. #ExtremeHeat #ClimateAdaptation #HeatwaveResilience #AIDMI #EarlyWarningSystems

The challenges of the Climate Crisis can only be met through international cooperation and a readiness to change our behaviour. This requires a well developed understanding of climate as our common public good.
Congrats, very good paper in PLOS Climate! Considering the barriers - why there is no global system yet - it would be important to be aware of the fact that that Early Warning Systems need ownership in order to cover the full value chain from forecasting to warnings (considering social vulnerabilities), maesures to be taken (e.g. plan canicule in France etc.) and also importantly preventive actions. From warnings onwards these are national responsibilities and thats where the hard work starts, where the political will for organizing all components across sectors is often underdeveloped. A global forecasting system, using e.g. WetBulb Globe Temperatures (WBGT) could be a useful starting point/criteria for warnings based on a common understanding of the problem.
New paper out: Preventing heat-related deaths: The urgent need for a global early warning system for heat (with a quick explainer video below) https://lnkd.in/e4jQgeKm With huge thanks to my co-authors, Jen Runkle, Cascade Tuholske, Daniela Domeisen,Chuansi Gao, Jørn Toftum and Ilona Otto. #heatwave #ClimateAction #SciComm

From Irma to Surfside, Miamians take care of each other. During climate-fueled flooding like we saw last month, we can take care of our own from extreme weather trainings to reporting hazardous conditions. Because last week's downpour wasn't a fluke, but an increasing pattern as a result of the #climatecrisis. And it’s not just stronger rains and more frequent storms. Scientists predict that 60% of Miami-Dade County will be underwater by 2060 due to the rising sea level caused by big corporations refusing to slow down fossil fuel burning. And our current infrastructure is nowhere near the state it needs to be to prepare. How will we advocate for better infrastructure against climate change? Who is taking care of our unhoused neighbors during these crises? What policies are helping or hurting us from this year's legislative session? Let's figure it out together at our monthly Miami Our Way working group session! Get the zoom link at catalystmiami.org/ourway

I know many people dont agree with some of this persons work. But many I listen to do have some commonality. THE SUN IS IN A CYCLE, are we at the end of a long one. Science show we are at minmium at the start of a 400 year grand solar minimum NOW and the IPPC smokescreen has meant we are not even prepared for that. let alone somethign worse.. PLus our magnetosphere is the lowets in thosuands of years ( see in the video the chnages in other parts of our solar systesm going on).. We have the approx 2K cycle of 4 gas giants lining up to Oct 2024. Even if we throw some of the baby and bathwater out here, some remains. If we had a major event15-25 years from now , what would the ultrawealth who display so much greed, ruthlessness and amorality to get where theye, what do you think thye would do so they could maybe come through such a cycle. Get the rest of us under iropnclad control, what do you think? Even the 400 eyar cycle, the magnetopshere and the aligment we will see more siesmic and vulcanism as per book like John Casey's Upheaval, let alone somethign worse.

Extreme weather events all over the country are putting utilities to the test. Just this past month, we've seen headlines like "Historic Heatwaves Stress Power Grids Across the South," "Severe Storms Cause Widespread Outages in the Midwest," and "Wildfires in the West Disrupt Energy Infrastructure." ⛈️ In a recent conversation with Mishal Thadani, CEO and Co-founder of Rhizome, we delved into how utilities are tackling these challenges. Rhizome's AI-powered platform helps electric utilities identify vulnerabilities from climate threats, quantify risks, and measure the economic and social benefits of grid-enhancing investments. ⚡️ Mish shared insights with Cody on balancing preventive investments to avoid disaster-related outages with strategies to rapidly recover after incidents. How do you think utilities can best prepare for and respond to these extreme weather events? Share your thoughts in the comments! 💡
