GeneLab represents a significant advancement in the field of Space Biology and Medicine, particularly in understanding how space travel affects biological systems. The integration of open science principles, such as FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Ethics, and Reciprocity), enhances the potential for transformative impacts in this area. The "Central Dogma" of biology, which describes the flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein, serves as a foundational concept in translating primary space omics data into actionable knowledge. This translation is crucial for developing new technologies, capabilities, and commercial applications that can arise from the insights gained through space research. As highlighted by Begum Mathyk's work, the exploration of gene expression changes linked to insulin and estrogen during spaceflight is just one example of how GeneLab's data can lead to significant findings in women's health and beyond. The ongoing advancements in AI and machine learning are expected to further enhance the capabilities of GeneLab, unlocking new avenues for research and application that have yet to be fully realized. In summary, while GeneLab is still in the early stages of demonstrating its full potential, the combination of open science, foundational biological principles, and emerging technologies positions it to make a profound impact on our understanding of biology in space and its implications for human health and bioregenerative life support. #nasa #genelab #bioinformatics #spacebiology #NASATOPS #openscience #nasagenelab

Very interesting instrument! The once so called Life Marker Chip (LMC) now dubbed the Life Detector Chip (LDChip), is an immunoassay microarray biosensing technology, coupled with the extraction unit Signs of Life Detector (SOLiD), that utilizes fluorescently labeled antigen-antibodies to analytically detect extremely low levels of small organic molecular products resulting from thermal and oxidative diagenesis of complex organic polymers (like lipids) within ice-cemented regolith hosts. Not only will this progress the detection of possible current life but also fossilized extinct life. All inspired by the classic hormonal tool... pregnancy tests! The innovation is amazing! #nasa #esa #astrobiology #LifeDetection@GT

https://lnkd.in/d8WJM8fy Very excited to share some background about our recent Astrobiology publication (https://lnkd.in/d54KPkhm). The research we have been performing at the German Aerospace Center (DLR)'s Institute of Aerospace Medicine with the support of Radboudumc has provided very interesting data about the survival of four bacterial species to Mars conditions. With the work of Ozlem Bulut, Anaisa Ferreira, Jorge Domínguez Andrés, and others, who are investigating the immunology effects these bacteria can have after they have survived the Mars conditions, we will be able to gain new insights into how these bacteria could interact with the immune system during a Mars mission. #Mars #planetaryprotection #humanhealthinspace

⭕ It is well-known that #Space is one of the most hostile environments known to date, affecting the #health of #Astronauts. The altered gravity conditions exert an influence on the cellular behavior, so the ability of monitoring the physiological condition of Astronauts could play a key role for the imminent long-term space mission. In addition, a specific technology that allows an accurate and fast analysis of the #lunar and #Martian soil specimens and samples returned from on-orbit experiments are of considerable importance. 🔬 #Raman technology, a non-destructive chemical analysis technique, designed by illuminating the sample with a laser beam, makes all this possible! 🔥Fondazione E. Amaldi has gained great knowledge on Raman spectroscopy, including Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering mode, which has been successfully employed in cancer screening and diagnosis in recent years. 🔎Using single-stranded oligonucleotides as affinity molecules for various target compounds, such as specific cancer biomarkers, is the win-win idea in the SERS-based cancer research. 📨 Don't miss the next developments...
