Future Generations Commissioner for Wales

Without action, spending on prevention will continue to be a casualty of intense pressures on day-to-day budgets and our well-being a victim of short-term thinking. I’ve written this week, in collaboration with the Health Foundation and the Welsh NHS Confederation, to the finance minister Mark Drakeford, to ask that all areas of devolved responsibility, including health, have an allocation specifically for preventative action. Hear Hear Derek. There remains huge frustration that health budgets aren't diverted into prevention and interventions like the ones we provide at Groundwork Wales. The myth that green prescribing and social prescribing is being funded is still circulating - we have small pilot after small pilot after small pilot. Evidence proves green and social prescribing work - now we need the funding to reach more people, so that more are connected to their own health and their environments, so that we keep people well throughout their lives.

Personally I feel investment should be levelled up to female entrepreneurs and women/ girls locally. Still only 1% this needs to level up

This is exactly what I argue for in my paper on community heritage and Wales, 'If Wales has wider health problems that need addressing, dealing with them at source, in the interest of future generations, may represent better long-term value for money.' - p. 24 - https://ojs.utlib.ee/index.php/SV/article/view/24451/18586

A live issue in terms of homelessness prevention- a cash flat homelessness prevention grant will have immediate and longer term human and financial costs. A very important, relevant and unfortunately familiar thought there Derek. My professional experience in 'preventative measures' comes via policing as Community Safety Manager but the principles (and problems) are exactly the same. People tend to get a bit scared of long term pre-emptive and preventative planning. Is it value for money? (which it almost always is) Does it have support and continuity? (which it should, if you properly support it) What if it supposedly 'fails'? (You will never know unless you -properly - give it a go) 😀

Great to see you calling for longer term thinking. Bearing in mind that our youngest citizens' families could be alive in 2150, I think that we have a duty to think at least that far ahead when it comes to eliminating the most material externalities from the system - food, plastics, PFAS, soil loss etc. Let's create the conditions for that to be second nature.

Would be very interested in having a roundtable conversation with stakeholders and you Derek in Pembrokeshire - we face significant issues in relation to an aging population, and need urgently to tackle the perpetual problem around funding to support communities #PAVS
