You don't need to go to an Ivy League school to have a great career. CUNY Baruch College and Georgetown send nearly as many students into Finance as Penn, with its Wharton School. Meanwhile, Carnegie Mellon, Olin, and Harvey Mudd College send as many of their students into high-paying tech careers as schools like MIT. In partnership with The Wall Street Journal, we studied graduate outcomes across a range of public and private institutions to understand which schools most often and most effectively propelled students into high-flying careers in finance, tech, and consulting.  Perhaps most striking was the performance of servicemember academies - the Naval Academy and the US military academy are among the top-ranked schools in the share of alumni who work in consulting and finance - a clear indicator that employers highly value the attributes instilled by these institutions. The antiquated liberal arts higher education model is often not a good fit for military & veteran students. One reason: These students are frequently not welcomed by administrators, professors, and fellow students at “elite” colleges. Career colleges, by contrast, offer flexible schedules, career-applicable coursework, and tailored programming, which for many students make them a better option. While the Department of Education and some aligned lawmakers try to paint career colleges as greedy predators eager to pounce on unsuspecting veterans—in actuality, many veteran students choose these schools because they are a better fit for their needs and goals. The colleges putting graduates onto the most lucrative pathways in finance, tech and management consulting include many schools you’d expect. But the list also includes some surprises. Graduates with some of the highest salaries in these fields attended schools like Baruch College, San Jose State University and the United States Naval Academy, according to data from the Philadelphia think tank The Burning Glass Institute. Their success shows that proximity to industry hubs and rigorous curricula are just as important as strong alumni networks and prestigious degrees, says Matt Sigelman, president of Burning Glass. The rankings—which include the top 20 public and private universities for launching graduates into high-earning jobs—aim to answer one question: If the chosen career and the number of years in the field are the same, what effect does the undergraduate school somebody went to have on their salary? Great programs for any middle/high school students interested in USNA. You get to spend a week with world-class faculty, some of the best and brightest college students in the country and take in the beautiful campus in full summer bloom. As a BGO, I always encounter a candidate who assumes that not getting selected for these programs is indicative of their chances for appointment. That is not the case! There are only so many slots available and limited, fixed windows to run these programs. Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t selected for a summer program. Your academic, athletic and civic resume will be the primary measures for earning your an appointment. And thst is only part of it. You must secure a nomination and pass all medical requirements. I say all this to encourage you to focus on the goal and meet each challenge as they come. Not every journey is the same. One of my favorite candidates are those that weren’t accepted but reapply the following year while completing their freshman year of college. That sort of drive and commitment to earning an appointment resonates with me (and I’m sure other alumni). That grit demonstrates you have the will to keep pressing on… an attribute that is far more indicative of success than other common metrics.

Our most recent career outcomes survey shows that 95% of graduates found employment, continued their education, joined the military, or started volunteer service within six months of spring graduation. To those thinking about leaving the military, please take a second to read Kristen McGachey's article. Some poignant quotes: "if anything, financial services is competing with defence for talent" "Military people underestimate their skills...they fall into the trap of thinking 'I don't understand finance. I don't understand the economy...How can i fit in there?'" "It's such a weird mindset to have that people who come out of the armed services can't do anything else.......I would argue that we're probably the most flexible out there" Like many finance firms, we at Wellington Management have an active veterans' network that looks to assist those transitioning into civilian life. It's a scary old world out there, but there is a whole network of Diversity Project - Investment Industry organisations that are there to help you. So, if you're a vet looking to transition into the finance industry, 'crack on and get the job done' (after all, you have experience and skills that our industry needs).
