The Channel Islands YMCA celebrated its 137th Annual Meeting at the Santa Barbara University Club on June 10, with over 80 attendees from Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties. The event commenced with an invocation from retiring Association Board Member Brian Gough. Highlights included the YMCA Golden Triangle of Distinguished Service Awards, honoring volunteers Sarah Abrams, Lisa Gonzalez, Tom Nevins, Marsha Roberson, and Marcus Kocmur. Talley Farms received the Community Excellence Award. CEO Margo Byrne praised the YMCA's significant impacts, including teaching 450 children to swim, providing over 5,000 scholarships, and supporting 100 cancer survivors. The event also celebrated staff achievements and innovative programming.

West Harlem arts centers share their stories of life after the pandemic
S/O to Elliot Heath and The Columbia Spectator for this excellent profile of four of our grantees (The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds) and the crucial work that they do in our community.
West Harlem has always been a haven for creative expression, boasting an array of arts-based organizations and community centers. With nonprofits in particular, outside funding and government grants help sustain programming, which can bolster community involvement. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, presented unforeseen hardships to small businesses across the city, including artistic centers. The Morningside Players, the Mama Foundation for the Arts, Dances for a Variable Population, and Arts & Minds, who all receive funding from the West Harlem Development Corporation, are four West Harlem-based organizations that faced such challenges. Now that operations are finally getting back to normal in the aftermath of the pandemic, here are their stories.

What:
A facilitated space to connect with stiving white bodied anti-racists to reflect and set intentions for embodied anti-racism in the year ahead! This session will included opportunities for grounding, community building, journal reflection and differentiated small group discussion depending on your goals ie, individual healing, strengthening your relationships across race, organizing at work, resource mobilization/reparations, self-education, etc.
Together we will co-compile a Community Garden of resources for further study, action and resource mobilization in support of BIPOC lead social justice movement work.
Why:
We believe MLK Day is a day ON for white folx. While we support opportunities to take action via community service and direct action, we also know space is needed to unpack our own growth towards greater anti-racism and focus in on our own areas of development in community with other white people. We hope that together we can share the resources and tools that supported our healing, unlearning and action throughout the year and motivate one another to stay active, learning, healing and pushing for racial justice in the year ahead.
Donation-proceeds will go to BIPOC led social justice organizations determined by the group
What BIPOC led groups have financially supported this past year? We will compile a list and select an org from this to send donations to. There will be an opportunity to add more during and after the session.

Trauma-Informed Care is a lens in which we interact with our communities to best support their healing and needs. Tenants of trauma-informed care include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. Applying these tenants to the fundraising space helps empower fundraisers to build a stronger communications and language that works to include donors in the work of justice and healing. Learning objectives will include how to craft narratives that center lived experience without othering or trivializing lived experience, how to practically apply trauma-informed principles to our work, and how to engage donors in the process of trauma-informed systems that lead to healthier philanthropic interactions and stronger community ties.

The scholar-athletes of Oakland Genesis wake up and hit the ground running (that is, after a well-deserved snooze or two on the alarm clock).
The youth in our programs have a lot going on—school, soccer, family responsibilities, work commitments, extracurricular activities, and more—and it’s our mission to support them as they try to find their place in this chaotic and vibrant city we call home. We do this by providing individualized programming tailored to each of our participants’ needs, from college essay support and academic counseling to nutritional education and competitive soccer coaching. The best part? All our programs are 100% free for Oakland youth and their families.
But we don't want to just talk about our work; we want you to see it in action. In the video below, you'll get a glimpse into a day in the life of two of our exceptional scholar-athletes, Yaretzi and Askari. You’ll see their neighborhoods and schools. You’ll meet their families and their mentors. And most importantly, you'll hear from both of them about how Oakland Genesis has played a vital role in shaping them into confident students, footballers, and people.
We are so proud of the achievements of Yaretzi, Askari, and the 2000+ youth we've supported since our inception in 2019. And yet, there are scores of talented youth in Oakland still in need of programming—and with your support, we can try to reach them.
As part of our Equal Play Campaign, which is dedicated to breaking down barriers preventing under-resourced youth from accessing high-level soccer, we have set an ambitious goal to raise $300,000 by the end of 2023.
