Local YMCA struggling to hire lifeguards this summer *By Gianna Njau, 25 News Now* BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) - As kids dive headfirst into swimming pools this summer, there might not be enough lifeguards to ensure their safety. According to the American Lifeguard Association, 309,000 public pools nationwide were closed or opened infrequently due to lifeguard shortages. The organization says this summer might be worse. “Lifeguarding is a very demanding job. People have to stay alert and have a physical demand which isn’t always an easy thing,” said Will Kent, aquatics director for the Bloomington-Normal #YMCA, which is experiencing staffing issues. “You are being relied upon in that space as a safety authority figure. There are so many different hazards that can happen around a pool space, or any open water space,” said Kent. The *American Lifeguard Association* said most lifeguards are relatively young. “I know a lot of our #lifeguards are in high school, if not in high school, then in college. That can be intimidating,” said lifeguard Piper Wood. The Bloomington-Normal Y is working to improve staffing conditions. “We try to get guards on a rotation to make sure they have a break. So, they’re not just staring at water and staying alert for that long,” said Kent. Wood said the job is hard, but she likes it. This issue is not isolated to Bloomington but reflects a nationwide challenge that could compromise safety at pools and beaches across the country. Reasons for the Shortage: Seasonal Employment: Many lifeguards are high school and college students seeking temporary or seasonal work, which leads to high turnover rates and recurring shortages each season. Demanding Nature of the Job: Lifeguarding requires constant vigilance, physical stamina, and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies. These demands can deter potential applicants. Competitive Job Market: With many alternative employment opportunities available, especially in a strong job market, young people may opt for less demanding jobs that offer competitive wages. Certification Barriers: The cost and time involved in obtaining necessary #certifications can be prohibitive for many young people considering #lifeguarding.
