Life on an offshore oil rig is both exciting and challenging. Let's dive into the details:
1. Workload and Shifts:
- Depending on your role (e.g., toolpusher, driller, subsea engineer), you'll work in extreme conditions—hot or cold.
- Expect long hours—usually around 12 hours per day—and be prepared for overtime during lengthy projects.
2. Extreme Weather Conditions:
- Offshore rig workers face harsh weather—extreme heat and cold—with limited breaks.
- Proper risk assessment and attention are crucial to handle these climatic changes.
3. Maintenance of Heavy Equipment:
- Working in the middle of the sea means dealing with dangerous equipment.
- Rig workers operate heavy machinery, emphasizing safety and proper training.
4. Salary and Sacrifices:
- Offshore jobs pay well due to specialized skills and associated risks.
- Rig engineers sacrifice family time and work irregular hours, but the pay reflects the demands.
Remember, life on an oil rig is like living in a floating city that never sleeps—a unique experience far from the nearest coast. If you're determined and motivated, you'll find fulfillment in this challenging yet rewarding environment! 🌊🛢️🌟
After 40 years in the welding industry and after training and employing hundreds of manual welders over several decades in several demanding industries. I am sure many would agree that high end pipe welding must be the most demanding of all the trades, whereby welds are subjected to x-rays, UT and several other NDT processes to interrogate the soundness of the welds to various Code requirements, this practise continues years after the welds are put into service, to determine if the welds are still performing and are fit for service. As a welder I understand how stressfull it can be to produce thousands of welds over several decades.
This is why as a Piping Welding business owner I knew and understood how welding technology could make both my business and my welders lives so much easier. It also thus gives me a lot of pleasure when I can train someone on a orbital welding machine in 4 weeks, where this person will OUT PERFORM and produce PERFECT QC welds than a seasoned manual welder with decades of experience.
A good example is this attached video, (Which is a first for OWS) of a LADY that we successfully trained as an Orbital Welding Operator within a 4 week period.
We can also furthermore confirm that this Lady is the FIRST Orbital Welder Operator in South Africa, and we are sure many more will follow!!!
