Ensuring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in nursing isn't just a conversation; it's a commitment. As caregivers, our patients and nurses deserve nothing less than a healthcare system that values and reflects everyone. Let's keep talking, advocating, and striving for a better, a more equitable future. I started my conversation with one of the best leaders I know who unapologetically pushes through with compassion and rigor for what’s right. Tune in..thank you David Wyatt, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR, FAORN, FAAN!
When patients see themselves in their caregivers, healing gets stronger! Studies show patients are more likely to share openly and follow through on treatment plans when they connect with their caregivers. This is where diversity in healthcare makes a tremendous difference. The more healthcare professionals reflect the communities they serve, the better patients can relate and feel understood. This leads to better communication, trust, and ultimately, improved health outcomes for everyone! AORN will host "Together We Rise" a president's forum throughout 2024 to engage periop nurses in the issues impacting the profession and patient care. Tune in for our first episode: https://lnkd.in/gJd5UB8Z #diversityinhealthcare #patientcare #healthoutcomes #representationmatters #healthcareheroes #ornurse #nursing #nurses #nurselife

Powerful testimony from a colleague and dear friend. As we navigate life’s pressures, let’s create a culture of openness, compassion, and support. Our workplace is not just about productivity; it’s about the wellbeing of each individual. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels safe to share their struggles. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay, and seeking help is a brave and important step. Let’s keep the conversation going and continue to support one another. 💛
Did you know that #nurses are at higher risk of #suicide than the general population? Nurses do a great job caring for others, but often do not prioritize their own self-care. This #suicidepreventionmonth, let's educate ourselves on recognizing the signs of a colleague at risk. https://ow.ly/BpBk50Thwpw

**The Rising Suicide Rate in Nursing: Addressing Mental Health through Self-Care** Nurses dedicate their lives to caring for others, but in doing so, many neglect their own mental and emotional well-being. Studies reveal that nurses face a higher risk of suicide compared to the general population, a statistic that cannot be ignored. The demanding nature of our profession—long hours, emotional exhaustion, and the weight of responsibility—contributes to high rates of burnout, depression, and anxiety. Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory offers a valuable framework for understanding this crisis. According to Orem, individuals have a responsibility to engage in self-care to maintain well-being. However, when external demands exceed one’s ability to care for themselves, a “self-care deficit” arises, leading to adverse outcomes. In nursing, the relentless focus on patient care often creates this deficit, with nurses prioritizing others at the expense of their own mental health. **What can we do to reduce this self-care deficit and prevent further tragedies?** - **Foster a Culture of Self-Care**: Just as we emphasize patient care plans, nurses must develop their own self-care strategies. This includes managing stress, seeking support, and taking breaks when needed. Self-care is not selfish; it is essential. - **Promote Mental Health Resources**: Employers must provide easily accessible mental health services, such as confidential counseling and peer support programs. Nurses should be empowered to utilize these resources without fear of stigma or professional repercussions. - **Implement Organizational Changes**: Addressing the systemic issues that contribute to burnout is critical. This includes reducing excessive workloads, providing adequate staffing, and encouraging a healthy work-life balance. By applying Orem’s model to nursing, we can better understand how the lack of self-care contributes to the mental health struggles in our profession. Suicide is preventable, but only if we take action to support the well-being of nurses, ensuring they are equipped with the resources and support to care for themselves. This #SuicidePreventionAwareness month, let’s prioritize self-care and mental health, not just for our patients, but for ourselves. #MentalHealthInNursing #NurseWellbeing #SuicidePrevention #DorotheaOrem #SelfCareDeficit #NurseSupport #BurnoutPrevention

Here’s to requiring workplace cultures that support healthy expectations, incorporate self-care in their practices, protect staff as a means of patient outcomes…AND hold leadership accountable in a measurable way to ensure this is executed and enforced at all levels?
