Ohio farm custom rates 2024 By Barry Ward, Eric Richer, John Barker and Amanda Bennett, OSU Extension Farming is a complex business and many Ohio farmers utilize outside assistance for specific farm-related work. This option is appealing for tasks requiring specialized equipment or technical expertise. Often, having someone else with specialized tools perform tasks is more cost effective and saves time. Farm work completed by others is often referred to as “custom farm work” or more simply, “custom work.” A “custom rate” is the amount agreed upon by both parties to be paid by the custom work customer to the custom work provider. Custom rates increased for the majority of field operations in 2024 as compared to surveyed rates in 2022 but the increases did vary by operation. Spot Spraying is a promising technology with great potential to positively impact farming by improving crop health, addressing weed resistance, and reducing chemical usage. It’s a technology I’m closely following, and we recently completed an extensive market study on it. John Deere shared an interesting update yesterday on their progress with See & Spray technology this season, reporting coverage of 1 million acres and an average savings of 59%. Here are a few key insights: - Covering 1 million acres is impressive, but I’m curious how many machines were involved. Based on some rough calculations, 1 million acres divided by 2 passes equals 500,000 unique acres. If each machine covers around 2,500 acres, this suggests roughly 200 machines in the field. Many of these machines are likely owned by dealers, as Deere has been focused on showcasing the technology to growers this year. It shows that we are still at the very early stage of adopting this technology, except for Australia, where there is already a higher adoption of spot spraying solutions. - A 59% savings is a solid result and more realistic than some companies’ claims of over 90% savings. It’s important to manage expectations—better to underpromise and overdeliver. The savings will vary a lot and will depend on weed pressure, crop protection strategies, weather etc. I believe the true value of this technology isn’t just chemical savings but also reducing weed resistance, enabling the use of diverse chemical mixes, and improving crop health. The value proposition requires extensive know-how of the individual farming operation. - The business model remains a challenge. Most providers combine an upfront hardware cost with a fixed annual license fee. Deere, however, uses an acre-based annual fee, where you pay based on the acreage covered by the technology. The article states that they will introduce an “application savings guarantee” for 2025, which seems like a smart move, as growers may not be keen on purely paying by the acre. - What’s missing is any mention of operational efficiency gains (or losses). On the one hand, fewer refills are needed, but on the other, depending on the solution (single tank vs. dual tank), growers may need to split applications since they can’t combine broadcast with spot spraying. Related to that is the high likelihood of chemical leftovers. - It would also be interesting to get feedback on algorithm accuracy—how well did the weed detection perform in different conditions, and what’s the impact of missed weeds? It’s encouraging to see John Deere sharing more insights into their results so far. 🇺🇦🌿Ukraine: start of rapeseed harvesting delayed by rains - ASAP According to farmers polled by ASAP Agri, the start of rapeseed harvesting campaign is postponed by approximately 2 weeks due to precipitations. It is now expected to start around mid-Jun. The most active harvesting is expected at the end of June. In Odesa region, the harvesting is expected to start at 15-20 Jun, but it will be the first fields that may not be revealed in the official report. But it may start even 2-3 days later, in case of rains. Generally, southern regions plan to begin threshing rapeseed earlier this year. As for the state of rapeseed crops, it is still too early to assess the damage from frost, as it was mostly local. The pessimistic scenario for yield is 2.5 MT/HA, while the optimistic one – 3 MT/HA. ASAP Agri's forecast of rapeseed yield 2024 is 2.7 MT/HA.

The crop protection sector in the calendar year 2023 presented a complex picture, characterized by both growth and contraction across its various segments. This year was shaped by significant challenges, notably persistent wage inflation and elevated inventory costs, which impacted the market in multifaceted ways. A pivotal factor influencing market dynamics was the destocking of inventory by retailers, particularly for generic products but also those of key proprietary crop protection products.
