Vision, commitment AND implementation are all critical!

The recent legislation signed by Governor Tina Kotek marks a transformative approach to Oregon's behavioral health crises. Particularly noteworthy is the multi-faceted strategy, which addresses everything from fentanyl education for students to streamlining the distribution of life-saving Narcan. By acknowledging that the state's mental health and addiction issues are interconnected and require an all-encompassing method, the governor and the supporting lawmakers are setting the stage for more comprehensive and effective care. The focus on Measure 110 and its optimized implementation also points toward a more humane and science-backed understanding of substance use disorders. However, the acknowledgment of 'unfinished business' suggests a long road ahead, especially concerning the Oregon State Hospital and workforce support. Members of the Gallatin Behavioral Health Coalition are tirelessly working together to enhance mental health and substance use services available across Gallatin County. No one provider can do it all - it takes a team of dedicated professionals to serve our community’s behavioral health needs! We’ve made a lot of progress over the past year. While there is still a long way to go and many exciting projects in the pipeline, we’d like to share some of our successes. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 Bozeman Help Center, our local 988/crisis line provider, gives real-time access to a live person every moment of every day for anyone who is in crisis, having suicidal thoughts, in emotional distress, or concerned about someone. They answer an average of 300 behavioral health calls a month. They are able to stabilize and de-escalate 75% of those who call them. Using the caller’s own strengths, support systems, the robust 211 and mental health database, and the Help Center’s crisis follow-up services –their work reduces demand on other community services. For the other 25%, callers are referred to community and medical services. A very small percentage involve the need to call 911. For 24/7 help, you can reach the Help Center at 988 or 406-586-3333. Mental Health Awareness Month I have the privilege of working with the most incredible behavioral health professionals in the nation. This is hard work. Every day they help individuals and groups develop their potential and possibilities. They are ever striving to find what is right and what is best to create hope, recovery, normalcy, and peace. Behavioral Health professionals save lives. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in those aged 10-34 and fifth in those 35-54. It is a death of despair that leaves a painful echo for those left behind. In 2022, over 100,000 people in the United States died of a drug overdose. We now have evidence-based strategies that can lead people to a life of recovery, led by behavioral health professionals. WHY SHOULD PEER SUPPORTERS AND PEER SUPPORT BE CELBRATED? Global Peer Support Celebration Day (GPSCD) celebrates peer supporters; the people who provide a shining example of overcoming the challenges often associated with mental health and or addiction issues for their peers. Peer supporters inspire hope and often fail to recognize and reflect on their contribution to serving others. Furthermore, peer supporters forget to celebrate what they do, let alone acknowledge ‘they’ make a difference on a daily basis in the lives of those they serve (seniors, adults, youth, children, and families) or how transformative they are (and have been) in #mentalhealth systems and the industry as a whole. This day of celebration and recognition highlights the impact and contributions peer supporters make in the lives of their peers who are facing mental health, addictions, and or trauma-related challenges. Moreover, when ‘one voice becomes many voices,’ elected officials, the public-at-large, organizations, co-workers, and others begin to breakdown stereotypes and stigma, and awareness of and support for peer supporters and peer work develops and grows. #PeerSupport   #wellness 💚

See the breakthroughs and milestones that have shaped mental health support as we know it today: 1950s 1952: The first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-I) is published. 1960s 1963: President Kennedy submits the first presidential message to congress on mental health issues, beginning a new era in federal support for mental health services. NIMH oversees the activity of these U.S. community mental health center programs. 1970s 1973: The American Psychiatric Association declassifies homosexuality as a mental disorder. 1980s 1987: Prozac, the first SSRI antidepressant, is approved by the FDA. 1990s 1990: The Americans with Disabilities Act is signed into law, providing protections for people with mental illness. 2000s 2001: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline becomes an essential resource for those struggling (which would later expand into the 988 Suicide and Crisis Line in 2021). 2010s 2017: Opioid Addiction is declared as a National Public Health Emergency for the first time (which would be renewed/redeclared 25 more times since then). 2020s 2021: WhiteFlag is launched, providing millions the first ever free, anonymous, peer-to-peer support app in the U.S. and Canada. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport #opioidaddiction #addictionawareness #suicideawareness #mentalillness #antidepressant #mentaldisorders #peersupport
