OhioMHAS Chief of Staff John Annarino reaffirmed Governor DeWine’s commitment to the mental health of Ohioans during the groundbreaking for Dani’s Place in Toledo, Ohio. Named in memory of Danielle “Dani” Leedy, who died by suicide in 2019, the mental health rehabilitation center will provide care to those leaving in-patient hospitalization, but not yet well enough to return to the community. Thanks to our partners at NAMI OHIO and Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County for their work to bring this model of care to Northwest Ohio.

FYI- This will prove to be an awesome training for those working with trauma impacted patients/clients. The Other Side of the ACEs Pyramid: An Indigenous Healing Framework Event Dates March 29, 2024, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Eastern Location Online Many people have learned about the landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study and its results demonstrating the link between ACEs and poor mental health and health outcomes. After hearing about this information, people often wonder what we need to do in order to address ACEs on a community-wide level. A public health framework to conceptualize next steps will provide a comprehensive community-driven approach to advance healing. Learning Objectives: Broaden the existing trauma lens to include cultural considerations of trauma and its impacts. Increase a broader understanding of how to mitigate the impacts of trauma on a community-wide level. Learn about the trauma focus areas that we can universalize to all children and families we connect with. Part 3 of the Santa Fe New Mexican's Mental Health Series: Those on frontlines of state's mental health care shortfall have solutions An important factor in recovery is ensuring treatment is available when a person is ready to seek it. There is a significant need in New Mexico for services, but there are efforts underway to bolster New Mexico’s behavioral health workforce and boost funding for certified community behavioral health clinics, an initiative which could help maintain a continuum of care and prevent those in need from falling through the cracks. https://lnkd.in/gpkF7fzv

In order to address the national epidemic of veteran suicide, DAV’s critical policy goal to bolster mental health resources and ensure a reduction in veteran suicides can be achieved through multiple steps by the VA: 1. Examining factors that prevent veteran suicide and the relationship of benefits usage 2. Appropriately fund the VA’s lethal-means safety campaign 3. Improve tailoring of prevention and intervention services towards veteran subpopulations. 4. Increase staffing levels of VA mental health providers 5. Improve clinical competence of providers in VA community care networks Learn more about DAV’s critical policy goals at http://dav.la/CPG2024.

have you heard about the newly proposed law set to go into effect this fall in san diego as a pilot program for the state of california? this law will make it easier for those with severe mental health conditions to be detained against their will. other states are considering this law as well to address the growing mental health crisis across the country. many see this as an attempt for the state to tackle homelessness and get people off the streets involuntarily. those who are considered "gravely disable" by the courts (often those in the growing homeless population) will have to comply with a court-ordered client evaluation and care plan. if they don't comply, it would most likely lead to longer term state oversight further re-traumatizing this very vulnerable population. now that i'm back in school pursuing my graduate certificate in clinical mental health counseling and on the path to lpc licensure, i've been following this closely. through my studies of the dsm-5-tr, it's still a lot of work needed in the understanding psychotic, mood and personality disorders (schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc.). i'm concerned with the connection between those who suffer from mental health illnesses and the prison system. the involuntary detainment of this population is inhumane. What are your thoughts? What do you think about this new law?

On Friday we joined with our partners, Quantum Support Services Inc., Gippsland PHN and The Cairnmillar Institute to launch the Supporting Recovery program. This $10m program will provide extended support to victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence in Latrobe and Baw Baw shires. The program has a couple of key differences: ✅ It will dramatically increase the number of people we can support in the wake of leaving violent situations. ✅ Rebuilding your life can take months or years, and healing progress can be uneven, but now we will be able to provide support for a much longer period of time. ✅ And importantly, the funding allows us to build the skills and capacity of the mental health workforce in Gippsland, through training and better clinical supervision. This in turn will lead to better outcomes for clients. This program is much needed in Latrobe and Baw Baw shires, and we feel we're in a position to make a meaningful difference to victim-survivors of family, domestic and sexual violence who are experiencing mental health challenges.

At Nest Health, we understand that the well-being of our providers impacts the well-being of the families we serve. This week during our New Orleans team's weekly clinical meeting focused on trauma-informed care, Nest's Mental Health Specialist, Patrice Hammond, reviewed self-care tips for providers caring for trauma patients. Trauma-informed care acknowledges that many patients have experienced trauma – whether from abuse, violence, or other social drivers – and that this trauma can deeply impact a family's physical and mental health. Trauma-informed care also emphasizes the importance of provider well-being in delivering this care. When providers feel healthy, engaged, and supported, they can more effectively meet the complex needs of families who have experienced trauma. In honor of #NationalNursesWeek and #MentalHealthMonth, we're sharing these tips with providers out there prioritizing trauma-informed care.
