Turkmenistan is a country with the world’s top 5 largest gas reserves, and its giant Galkynysh gas field is one of the largest in the world, which began production only a decade ago. It was planned to be developed in 3 different phases with roughly a capacity of 30 BCM per phase. The country intends to develop the field through seven stages that will enable the field to expand total production capacity up to 200 BCM. The first phase of the development is fully operational, feeding the Central Asia-China gas pipeline and domestic consumers. The gas produced from phase 2 will supply China with an additional 25 bcm per year through the fourth string of Central Asia- China gas pipeline. According to various media reports, the discussions on the development of phase 2 are activating; however, how close it is to the deal seems to be uncertain. The third phase should supply 33 bcm of gas annually through the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline. The fourth phase might supply gas through a Trans-Caspian gas pipeline, plans for which are only being discussed. However, the exact timetable of the development and how many of them will be realized are unclear. Development of large fields takes a long time, and negotiations usually take even longer. This was notably lower than the number of gas pipelines worldwide, as the fossil fuel is more commonly transported via pipelines than crude oil. As reported by Statista still in October 2023, there was a total of 1,869 operational gas pipelines worldwide. Seven pipelines, two of which located in Russia, were retired and China had the largest number of the operational gas pipelines.
