Bringing Clarity to the interesting and challenging job of an HSE professional….   I was in a conversation with friends recently, and the discussion shifted to our jobs and the nature thereof.   We had in our midst, an electrical Engineer, a Structural engineer, a Mechanical engineer and of course me, a HSE Professional. Incidentally we all function in the oil and gas space.   From our discussion, it was quite obvious that many do not quite understand the very interesting and challenging job of HSE professionals. As a result, I decided to share this post to give insight into what it means to be a safety professional.   The HSE professionals’ job is aptly summarized under 2 headers; Loss Prevention and Cost Saving, which they achieve through Equipment & Structural integrity Assurance, Process Optimization, and Behavioral Modification.   Let me put these in simple terms…   The HSE professional is largely responsible for ensuring that anticipatory measures for accident prevention, equipment damage and failure, process failure & Incidents, including personnel injury and possible fatality that causes loss and severely dents a company reputation is prevented. The baseless idea of Mauritanians don’t exist in the field of Oil & Gas and the terrible mistake that many contractors/subcontractors committed during the GTA phase-1 development are among the questionable failure of local content. I am not sure what drive several companies involved during the project development or even during later time in the operation to have the idea of lack of training or skills for locals (Mauritanians) to be part of the project. 1- Mauritania does have engineers in every displine ( Process, Mechanicals, Instrumentation, Electrical, Project Managements, HSE, Maritime, Finanace, others). 2- Mauritania does have local companies able to do welding, NDT, Logistics, other services related to supply bases). 3- Mauritania does have geologists, Geophysist, reservoir, subsea engineers, staffs who join drillings onshore and offshore and knows the basins and prospects well. What is the objective of project of GTA that has overshooting budget to a staggering number of $ 10 Billions if simple job creation are not achieve for Mauritanians? 4- Check the manpower rate & cost and do tell me how many Mauritanians made it to have a salary or return from this budget?! As Mauritanian, we see the common insterst of everyone in GTA but there are our interests that should be preserved in short in long terms and recruitments of locals are right to everyone from fresh graduate to experienced and all should adher to value adding and knowledge sharing in order to develop the local expertise. My journey began with a thorough analysis of the project’s demands. Argon welding, a specialized skill essential for our project's high-quality standards, required welders with specific qualifications and experience. I worked closely with our construction and quality team to define the exact technical skills and certifications needed. At first, I crafted a Targeted Recruitment Strategy: With a clear understanding of our requirements, we developed a tailored recruitment strategy. This included: Sourcing Channels: We tapped into industry-specific job boards, welding schools, and professional networks to cast a wide net (within the region where these skills are in high demand such as Rivers State, Delta and Lagos State. In short, I have a pool of welding school where I could spool out well seasoned welders) More so, as a team we streamlined the selection process: Given the specialized nature of the role, we designed a rigorous selection process: such as Pre-Screening Assessments: We used technical assessments to evaluate welders’ skills and ensure they met the AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, API 1104 standards Practical Tests: In addition to interviews, we included hands-on welding tests to assess proficiency in Argon welding and ensure that both destructive and non destructive tests are performed. Onboarding and Integration: Once selected, integrating 30 new welders into the project seamlessly was crucial. We: Provided Comprehensive Training: Ensured that all welders were familiar with our specific project requirements and safety protocols by ensuring that Safety induction is done Facilitated Smooth Transition: Coordinated logistics and support to make their onboarding process as efficient as possible and provided accommodation to welders momentarily for those coming from a farther distance. Continuous Support and Feedback: Post-hire, we maintained regular check-ins to ensure that the welders were meeting performance expectations and to address any concerns promptly. This is done by reviewing their repair rate.
