Another excellent campaign from the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) for #FarmSafetyWeek. The normalisation of risk when nothing bad happens to us after poor practice or cutting corners is something we can all easily do. A timely reminder to strive for safe working and best practice. No matter what the time penalty or cost may be, the video reminds us that the alternative will be far worse when the odds finally catch up with us. Training is a fundamental part of effective risk assessment and safe working. We are proud to work with Stephanie and her team in preparing our students for placement and have greatly appreciated her tireless support over the last 10 years. Provision of training to everyone new to our industry is something I passionately believe in. As an industry, I think we can do more to ensure basic training like tractor and fieldwork, telehandler, ATV, livestock handling and safe working practices around things like heights and farm yards are seen as mandatory rather than just beneficial, as they perhaps tend to be.

Food manufacturers can not succeed without the high-quality produce supplied by farmers 👩🌾 Sadly, according to new figures from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), farming continues to have the poorest safety record of any occupation. There are more risks associated with farming than any other industry with agriculture accounting for just 1% of the working population but 17% of all deaths in the workplace. This week aims to highlight the importance of farm safety and offers the opportunity to review the way we approach farm safety and risk-taking. When it comes to farm safety, you cannot rely on luck. #FarmSafetyWeek

As we mentioned yesterday, lead poisoning can have lifelong effects, especially in children. This is especially relevant in Toledo, where many homes were built before 1978. Prior to that year, lead-based paint was commonly used in residential buildings. As these homes age, the paint can deteriorate, creating dangerous lead dust or chips that can be harmful if ingested or inhaled. To protect your family, it's important to understand how lead is identified and what steps can be taken to remediate it. Watch part two of our Lead in the Home series to learn about the process of detecting lead in homes and the measures that can be taken to ensure your living environment is safe. We'll also provide tips on monitoring your child's health and development if they have been exposed to lead. Together, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department and the City of Toledo Department of Housing and Community Development are working to prevent lead poisoning, ensuring that every child in our city can grow up in a safe, healthy home. https://ow.ly/UYUp50TPXyo #LeadPoisoningPrevention #LeadSafeToledo #NLPPW24 #GetTheLeadOut

Apologies for cross-posting: I've started a Substack website and newsletter called Galveston, oh Galveston. It was originally for immediate family only, but I've made it public. My purpose is to reconnect with old friends, connect with strangers who care about the city, and to gin up interest in a book I'm working on. The book is about past, present, and future measures to save Galveston from the rising Gulf, and the ethical and material entanglements of those measures. I will not charge for subscriptions because most of my posts are either parochial or peculiar. To subscribe, or to simply check it out: https://lnkd.in/g5Ku9G3p Much obliged, and sincere thanks for your time. Madison Searle

In the case of both lionfish and lawyers, it is difficult to tell from the outside what characteristics they do and do not possess. One of the few conclusions that can perhaps be drawn is that most people probably find a lionfish more appealing to look at.
