Fast Company's Elissaveta Brandon recently visited us at Amatelas, our freshly launched vertical farm located in Phillipsburg, NJ. We enjoyed giving her an inside look into how our humans, bees and robots work together to grow delicious, pesticide-free, always-in-season berries 🍓 #verticalfarming #strawberries #Oishii

Helping retail brands attract evolving consumers and outshine competitors by identifying & prioritizing innovation initiatives
I despise that there are more buns in a package then there are actual hot dogs in package. It is so superfluous! Joseph O'Connor mentioned Applegate's "Father of the Bride" moment. They realized that all of the claims customers need to scan on a hot dog package was no better than the bun n' dog dilemma. When customers shop for hot dogs they are inundated with choices. Do you get... No Antibiotics? All-Natural? Organic? and now...Regenerative Agriculture?? 😵💫 Joe says, "Applegate loyalists shouldn't have to choose!" Even though regenerative agriculture is the right thing to do. To execute however, can be a challenge because of the change that it requires for them and their partners—the farmers. Applegate has committed to making all hot dogs regenerative agriculture to remove that as a choice consumers need to make. This makes the category better for the customer and the environment. Regenerative agriculture in our food system is true innovation. It takes dedication, communication, follow through, and a little mindfulness💡🧘♂️. #innovation #cpgindustry #GRL #RetailExperts #sustainability #SteveMartin #allnatural #organic #regenerativeagriculture #hotdogs

BeeHero just appeared in a fantastic new article in The Packer thanks to Jennifer Strailey. Strailey takes readers into the almond market, the need for better pollination solutions, BeeHero operations, and, of course, our new PIP solution. “The hive is just the beginning of the story. BeeHero moves into the field to understand the contributing factors that are enabling bee traffic and pollination success and the factors that are working against us,” explains Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Ze'ev Barylka. The article explains that with our in-field sensors and PIP platform, we can provide the full picture to growers, so they can maximize their pollination and get better yields consistently and reliably. A conversation with Chris Bloomfield and Daniel Reisman, co-founders of Collie, a provider of virtual #cow guidance system for managing production in #grazing, about enabling regenerative #dairy, how #virtuallyfencing drastically reduce labour and boost production. We dive deep into going from #vegan to grazing, #animal welfare, and the state of our planet. How do we enable more farmers to hold complexity on their farms? How do we use #technology to enable complexity instead of using technology to make everything mono, as we have done in the last 50 years? #agtech Chris and Daniel went on a months-long deep dive into the general food and agri space and systems change also thanks to Fresh Ventures Studio. They both came to the conclusion that in order to feed ourselves and the planet sustainably, we need to have animals as part of agriculture instead of separated, as it is the case now. And the biggest lever is getting more animals outside as soon as possible! So, what is holding us back? We have all seen the benefits of well-integrated animals in agriculture. Managed grazing does wonders for #pastures and #biodiversity, let alone when you graze cover #crops. Why aren’t animals, mostly ruminants, but also others, an integrated part of agriculture anymore? This mostly has to do with, surprisingly, labour as grazing animals properly takes a lot of time, often multiple times a day moves, etc. Enjoy and have a nice weekend! https://lnkd.in/dJUeYhYR

When I picture myself in my happy place, I often am in the orchard. I am barefoot in the clover, wearing my comfiest overalls. I am one with nature. The bees hum, the birds sing, and the juice of a fresh peach drips down my chin. As organic farmers, we can be guilty of romanticizing old-fashioned farming. In my farming dreams, I do not hear the rumble of a tractor or the exhales of pneumatic pruners. When Colby and I decided to go all-in on farming, we quickly learned there would be more hand-blistering chores than bare-foot frolics. We established the values that would realistically guide our orchard toward being the happiest place we could imagine. But we decided to imagine a place that embodied what we called “Prosocial Farming” rather than any fantasies of the simple life. One of our core values on the farm, now, is “Joyful, Safe Work.” And sometimes high-tech, new-fangled, even gas powered (gasp!) solutions bring the greatest joy and safety. Such is our new pruning platform. Its description almost sounds like a parody: hydraulically controlled platforms that can swing into the trees all-wheel drive with limited slip 2-wheel and 4-wheel steer capability hydrostatic transmission centrally located bin elevator ultrasonic auto-steering system When we chose to farm organically we chose to prioritize the health of our customers, our community, and our planet. We also are prioritizing the health of our farm workers. A machine like our new pruning platform makes their task of pruning less hazardous and more ergonomic. The swinging-into-trees part also brings some joy. So in the the spirit of health, safety, and happiness, we would like you to join us in welcoming our newest addition to the farm fleet: our super-cool pruning platform. Also, in alignment with our value of safety, I now almost always wear shoes when I am in the orchard. -Leslie

Managing Director, Aquatic Life Institute | Global Food Systems | Aquaculture & Wild Capture Fisheries | Animal Welfare
What do 3-D printing, #plantbased alternatives, and #octopuses 🐙 have to do with one another? 🏛 Aquatic Life Institute celebrates this new innovation, which we are keen to try out, particularly as it comes on the heels of the world's first octopus farming ban in #WashingtonState, which was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee. This aligns perfectly with our '4R' approach to seafood system reform: Reduce, Refine, Replace, Refuse in the Replace category https://ali.fish/4rs "Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain." Sometimes you just gotta put your money where your mouth is. So during field demos in orchards, vineyards and hop yards, we like to go head-to-head with conventional spraying. We have two sprayers, one equipped with a Smart Apply Intelligent Spray Control System and one without. We then have each sprayer spray two rows - using water rather than chemicals. The trees or vines have paper test strips to document the application. Here are results of a demo done last summer. The conventional sprayer applied 16.86 gallons to Smart Apply’s 3.92 gallons. Same orchard, same trees. The difference is Smart Apply’s LiDAR that applies chemicals based on a plant’s size and foliage density - nothing sensed, nothing sprayed. This compared to the continuous spraying of an air blast sprayer. If you’re a grower, there’s still time to optimize crop protection while reducing your chemical use/costs. If you are cruising through your errands this weekend and see this bin… Do yourself a favor and grab a melon! It’s been very cool seeing Melon1’s packaging and bins all over the place lately. Often we take for granted picking produce - we simply grab a fruit or veggie and don’t think about what it took to get that item from farm to store to your fridge. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many members of fhe Melon1 family and I think it’s important to acknowledge the work/dedication it takes to fill our fridges with quality (key word quality) food. Melon1 is a big player in the watermelon world, but it still feels like a family affair. Born from the collaboration of multiple multi-generational watermelon businesses. Today, Melon1 partners with family farms across the U.S. and Central America, ensuring top-notch quality and freshness. The farmers, often multi-generational, bring decades of expertise, whether they're in Florida, Georgia, or beyond. It's this blend of tradition, innovation, and most importantly - collaboration that keeps them at the forefront of the watermelon industry as well as the agriculture industry as a whole! The collaborative efforts on display at Melon1 and other farming organizations are a great reminder to other sectors on how to work together at scale. Farmers are such an important part of our economy and it should get every American fired up to see this bin when they walk into a store! I mean look at that - American grown. High quality food. Even the pallet is red, white, and blue!
