CEO of Mercedes-Benz

Today, the European Commission proposed extending the rules of origin for batteries and electric vehicles traded between the #EU and #UK. Why is this good news?   Mercedes-Benz is committed to a fully electric and zero-emission future of mobility. Accordingly, we are investing tens of billion euros into new technologies. This also includes the decarbonization of our supply chain. Batteries for electric vehicles play a crucial role in this.   Together with ACC, for example, we will develop and efficiently produce battery cells and modules in Europe. With this partnership, among other things, we can also help to ensure that Europe remains at the heart of the auto industry – also in an electric era.   But of course, this will not happen overnight. It will take a few more years to realize this huge and complex industrial transformation.   Against this backdrop, we are happy that today the European Commission proposed the extension of the current rules until the end of 2026. We will make the best use of the time and work tirelessly to drive forward the transformation of our company.   Now we hope and expect that EU member states support the European Commission’s proposal.

In order to be competitive and supply chain-safe, cells need to be produced from Li mined and refined, graphite mined and processed, Co, Ni and other metals mined and refined not in China and other authoritarian countries threating to attack their neighbours (and without the use of child labour!). The same concerns the numerous microchips each battery needs. It's a long way... Now the major part of value chain in cells and these not so complicated chips is generated by Chinese manufacturers with coal-based energy. This has to be changed!

I agree with this strategy, but for me I think the EU OEMS need to achieve the low consumer costs the Chinese market sees. We have to be honest here and this is a strategy to get EU OEMs up to speed but should not be an opportunity to falsely inflate car prices to customers.

If the EU comission wont take quick stept against Chinees EV-s, our industry here in Europe is in big trouble.
