VItamin D & asthma? Spoiler - not much benefit!!! A brand new systematic review of 13 randomized controlled trials reported that: Compared to placebo, vitamin D supplementation had no significant effect on serum IgE - allergy marker blood eosinophils - allergy marker FeNO - marker of airway inflammation The authors conclude: 'Vitamin D supplementation in individuals with asthma was not associated with lower inflammatory biomarkers' My takeaway - vitamin D not really of any benefit to asthmatics. Trust me, as an asthmatic, I was and am disappointed that vitamin D, a relatively safe and cheap intervention has little or no benefit for asthma. May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. What is Asthma? Asthma is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and swelling of the airways. This results in narrowing of the large and small airways that carry air from the nose and mouth to the lungs. Asthma symptoms include trouble breathing, wheezing, coughing and tightness or pain in the chest. Symptoms can be triggered by different things for different people. Allergens, like seasonal pollen, mold spores, dust or pet dander are common triggers. Some people also develop asthma symptoms in response to respiratory infections, airway irritants, pollution, weather changes certain foods or with exercise. Asthma can be deadly if it is not recognized and managed appropriately. There is no cure for asthma, but appropriate education and treatment prevents asthma attacks and can help you have a better quality of life. As allergy, asthma, chronic respiratory diseases have increased with COPD being second death causing disease [17/06, 14:55] Vijay Warad: ABOUT The health effects of climate change encompass an increase in allergic respiratory diseases, exacerbations of COPD, premature mortality, and a decline in lung function. This decline in lung function can elevate the risk of respiratory conditions, such as episodic wheezing during viral infections. Climate change, driven by greenhouse gases, adversely affects the most vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and children. Deficits in lung function have been linked to a combination of pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide, acid vapour, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and elemental carbon. It leads to an increased IgE-mediated response and enhanced airway inflammation, contributing to the rising frequency of respiratory allergies and asthma. [17/06, 14:59] Vijay Warad: While refreshing, the rainy season often brings a spike in cold, cough, and throat infections. The increased humidity and fluctuating temperatures create an ideal environment for viruses and bacteria to thrive. Damp conditions and sudden weather changes can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to respiratory illnesses. Staying warm, dry, and maintaining good hygiene practices are essential to ward off these common ailments during this time.

Continuing our May series on asthma and allergies, today we are debunking common myths about these two conditions. Myth 1: People with #asthma should not exercise Truth: Exercise is important for overall lung health. In fact, many Olympians and professional athletes have asthma. If you properly manage your symptoms, you can participate in any sport or activity (American Lung Association). Myth 2: Asthma is caused by allergies Truth: Asthma is not caused by allergies and some people with asthma do not have allergies. However, it is important to note that some allergens including pollen, dust, and pet dander can trigger asthma symptoms. This is called allergic asthma (American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology). Myth 3: Allergies are harmless Truth: Allergies occur when a person’s immune system overreacts to a usually harmless substance. It is important that they be taken seriously as they can reduce a person’s quality of life and prevent them from participating in certain activities.
