We cannot emphasise this enough. Research is a critical cornerstone of health improvement on the continent. That will enable us to tackle the known and unknown (present and future) health threats targeting our populations. Unfortunately, according to the 2022 UNESCO UIS data: 👉🏾 ~95 per 1 million people is the ratio of researchers in Africa (Global average: +1350) 👉🏾 0.33 is the percentage of gross domestic product on research and development (Global average: 1.93) Reflecting on the future of public health in Africa, Prof Wafaie Fawzi, Dr Justine Bukenya et al. carried out an interesting assessment of the capabilities of public health training in Africa and concluded with a set of insightful recommendations, the implementation of which would benefit the continent. Among others, they highlighted the pressing need to: 📍Strengthen links between academic, practice, and research partners 📍 Increase financing for capacity building 📍Promote interprofessional education Together, those recommendations reinforce our cry to see medical centres, higher education institutions, public and private sector institutions and the civil society (to name a few) working together, INTENTIONALLY taking collective actions to drive the change that MUST happen if we wish to alleviate the burden of disease in Africa and beyond. #HealthinAfrica #Africanexcellence #obalamu

As #Day2 of #AfricaEvidenceWeek2024 celebrations comes to an end, sit back and enjoy listening to Sherry Ahirirwe, a research scientist at The Center for Rapid Evidence Synthesis (ACRES), talking about the development of a national health research agenda in Uganda that has traditionally relied on expert opinion and disease burden: https://lnkd.in/dkYez3ph. However, this approach has limitations. To address this, ACRES is leading an effort to create an evidence gap map of all health research conducted in Uganda between 2010 and 2022. This map will inform the revision of the 2010 Health Research Agenda in collaboration with the Uganda National Health Research Organisation and the Ministry of Health. This map will guide the next phase of priority setting, involving stakeholder engagement through an online survey, Delphi exercises, and a physical meeting. 🌟Exciting update from CPHIA! 🌍 The annual International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) is organized by Africa CDC and provides a unique African-led platform for leaders across the continent to reflect on lessons learned in health and science, and align on a way forward for creating more resilient health systems. Today at #cphia2023 , R4D’s Seyni Mbaye presented the findings of a new study on the importance of inclusive policy dialogue for designing successful health system strengthening initiatives. The study focuses on the ideal nature of stakeholder-intensive policy dialogues — including the necessary extent of stakeholder inclusion and insights into common potential pitfalls — alongside methods to evaluate the success and value-added benefits of policy dialogue within the broader system. The study underscores the significance of inclusion and collaboration in the success of a health system strengthening process — and yet, inclusive policy dialogue is frequently overlooked in the planning and execution of health system interventions. 👉 Stay tuned for more info about this study! 🚀 Is Africa Pioneering the Next Digital Health Revolution? 🌍💡 “Imagine a world where healthcare knows no borders, where digital innovation propels us into a future of universal health coverage. This is not a distant dream—it’s the unfolding reality in #Africa.” Greetings, LinkedIn community! I recently attended the 3rd International Conference on Public Health in Africa (#CPHIA 2023) in Lusaka, Zambia, and I’m thrilled to share my takeaways with you. The theme, “BREAKING BARRIERS: REPOSITIONING AFRICA IN THE GLOBAL HEALTH ARCHITECTURE,” was a powerful call to action that resonated throughout the event. #Digital_Health was the star of the show, and rightly so. It’s the catalyst for a health transformation unlike any we’ve seen before. Here are some highlights that showcase Africa’s digital health trajectory: Amref Health Africa demonstrated how digital technologies are not just catching us up but catapulting us forward. Africa CDC emphasized the need for a unified health data system through Harmonized Health Information Exchange (HIE) Implementation. VillageReach and the University of Leeds showed us that digital health innovations are the key to achieving Universal Health Coverage. The development of a digital health workforce is preparing us for a future where technology and talent converge. Reach Digital Health and their HealthTech Revolution are bridging the gap for UHC, proving that technology can be a great equalizer. Discussions on Transforming Health in Africa through Digital Innovation highlighted the broad impact of digital health beyond just healthcare delivery. The focus on Accelerating UHC through innovation showed a comprehensive approach to tackling the diverse challenges faced by the health sector. The question on everyone’s mind was, “Will Africa Leap Frog in Digital Health?” After witnessing the passion, innovation, and collaboration at CPHIA 2023, I say we’re not just witnessing it; we’re leading it. Join me in celebrating the strides we’re making and the barriers we’re breaking. Africa is not just participating in the global health architecture; we’re redefining it.
