#SoutheastAsia, a key producer of metals like nickel and copper, is expanding its downstream processing industry, particularly in #Indonesia. By leveraging digital and analytics (DnA) technology, the sector could unlock $4-5 billion in value by improving productivity and efficiency. Indonesia's shift from exporting raw ore to building downstream processing capabilities, driven by government policies since 2019, has led to a rapid increase in smelters and processing capacity. Despite this growth, the industry hasn't fully tapped into the power of #data. DnA solutions, such as #AI-driven analytics and digital control towers, could enhance decision-making and optimize operations, potentially improving throughput by 8-10% and recovery rates by up to 3%. To achieve this, companies must undergo a “triple transformation”—aligning #business strategies, reshaping organizational culture, and upgrading technology infrastructure. This comprehensive approach could help Southeast #Asia's processing industry leapfrog toward becoming a global leader in #metals and #mining, enhancing its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market. Indonesia, holding over half the global market share in nickel as of 2023, has experienced a surge in nickel mining and production activities, causing a glut that decreased global prices. But this has led to unsustainable extraction rates, prompting the government to impose a moratorium on new processing facilities and request investment in High Pressure Acid Leach facilities for electric vehicle battery production. These strategies must balance economic growth, job creation and environmental sustainability.

WORLD’S LARGEST COPPER SMELTER OWNED BY FREEPORT OFFICIALLY OPERATES IN INDONESIA The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) smelter, located in the Java Integrated Industrial Ports Estate (JIIPE) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Gresik, East Java, has officially commenced operations. This monumental achievement represents the Indonesian Government’s commitment to industrial downstream policies, aiming to enhance the national economy while ensuring resilience. 🔍 KEY POINTS: ✅ Unprecedented Scale: - The PTFI smelter stands as the world’s largest single-line copper refining facility. - Its impressive refining capacity reaches 1.7 million tons of copper concentrate annually. - The project spans 100 hectares within the JIIPE SEZ and boasts a cumulative investment value of US$3.7 billion. ✅ Domestic Value Creation: - Beyond benefiting domestic construction companies, the smelter’s operation will create multiplier effects for the people of Gresik Regency. - By refining 3 million tons of copper concentrate annually, it contributes significantly to Indonesia’s industrial landscape. - The collaboration with PT Smelting further enhances the country’s copper production capabilities. ✅ Integrated Mining and Royalties: - The smelter represents a groundbreaking integration from mining to the final product. - Gold production (50 tons) and silver production will generate royalties, bolstering government revenue. - This holistic approach ensures that all copper concentrate produced by PTFI can be processed and refined domestically. ✅ Ecosystem Support for Downstreaming: - PTFI’s presence in the Gresik SEZ aims to attract an ecosystem that supports downstream industries, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). - As EVs gain prominence, copper’s role becomes even more critical due to its use in electrical components. ✅ Economic Impact: - The Gresik SEZ has already recorded an impressive investment value of IDR 75.2 trillion by March 2024. - Over 35,000 workers have found employment within this thriving economic zone. - Strengthened exports, including nickel and palm oil, contribute to Indonesia’s economic stability. 🔗 Read full article on https://lnkd.in/gDkzwKYG #CopperSmelter #IndustrialDevelopment #IndonesiaEconomy #SustainableGrowth

Today, I facilitated a roundtable, where we exchange insights with the industry leaders from Indonesia’s mining and metals sector. We are honored to have senior representatives from the Embassy of India joining us as well. We discussed: 🌱 The opportunities for growth for Mining and Metals companies in Indonesia, a country rich in critical mineral resources 🔝 What could prevent us from fully capitalizing on these opportunities: • short term focus • not understanding global market drivers • Unprepared for the dynamic nature of the market ✅ How we could convert risks into opportunities: • Set longer-term goals, but break them into short-term, measurable and implementable objectives • Have an integrated approach across the value chain, rather than working in internal silos • Ensure correlation between investment and impact Operationalize your strategy. Build resilience. Let’s connect, and drive positive change in the industry. #miningandmetals #protecttransformsustain #safety #sustainability #operationalexcellence Juliana Tarazona; Srinivasan Ramabhadran; Artyom Kachkovsky; Dr Sunil Duggal; Sophia Ong; Dyka Aji Nuswantoro; Zulfikar Fathoni; Lintang Adi Pradana
