The war for top developer and quant developer talent (individual contributors) is raging in financial markets right now, and this has led to some very interesting conversations with candidates at Investment Banks, Proprietary Trading firms, and even some high-profile hedge funds about their compensation packages. Some developers are doing ok, but for many candidates, I can only assume they are victims of the "loyalty discount." I have spoken to developers earning half of what is available at top funds and, worst cases, a third or fourth of what they could earn in the market. The interview processes are competitive, and candidates will be tested thoroughly on their skills, experiences, and character, but the rewards have never been greater. If you are a developer or quant developer in the financial markets working at a good firm in London or New York and want to sanity-check your compensation package, email me at james@winston-fox.co.uk. I am always happy to talk to new people. The super hot areas at the moment are C++, Python, some C# .NET, Algo Trading, Derivatives Trading, and Macro. #careers #financialmarkets #softwaredevelopers #quantdevelopers #compensationpackages

Many of you from non-computer science backgrounds may wonder whether it's necessary to learn competitive programming for careers in quantitative finance. 💻💻💻 The answer largely depends on the specific roles you are aiming for in the industry. ❤️❤️ In the field of quantitative finance, there are various positions including quant researchers, quant developers, quant analysts, risk analysts, and quant modelers. Each of these roles has different requirements and expectations. 😀😀😀 I have tried to cover the answer in the below video. A question I often encounter from students and upcoming engineers: “Is Bloomberg a good place to start for someone aiming to become a Quant developer?” This topic seems to resonate with many, and I usually do a full-stop the moment people mention "I want to be a Quant" so I thought I'd share some thoughts but in short, yes, it does help as you can see by the screenshot. 🤔 Why Quant Developer? First, it’s important to introspect. Is the allure of being a 'Quant developer' about the role itself or the prestige it carries? Understanding your motivation is key. 🌟 The Bloomberg Experience: Working at Bloomberg can certainly be a stepping stone, offering not just the big name in Finance but also a diverse range of experiences. It's less about the specific tasks you perform and more about the learning and growth opportunities that come with the environment. 🔍 Diverse Teams, Broad Exposure: Yes, Bloomberg has teams focused on trading systems, but there are also teams engaged in projects far removed from traditional finance. This variety means you can gain a wide spectrum of experience, which is invaluable early in your career. 🛤️ A Career Path, Not a Destination: If you're passionate about becoming a Quant developer, Bloomberg or any fintech like JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, etc. can be part of your journey. But remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint. It's about gathering diverse experiences and skills, not just chasing a title. Stay curious, open to learning, and flexible in your path, that is how you eventually reach you goal and who knows... it may not be a Quant Developer, it could be Underwater basket weaving, you never know. #softwareengineering #quantdeveloper #CareerAdvice #fintech

Titles of Quant roles can be quite confusing, what’s the difference between ad Quant Researcher and a Quant Analyst for instance? Another really helpful post from Quant Insider that I thought might help shed some light 🔵 Quant Researcher – typically work very closely with PMs and usually takes home a % of PnL Use stats and ML to predict market returns and find “alpha”. Usually have a PhD and have very strong programming 🔵 Quant Trader – traders build algos / computer programmes to make markets / create liquidity. They will buy or sell assets and aim to hedge positions. They make profit from the bid-ask spread. 🔵 Quant Analyst – Quant Analysts build pricing and risk tools. They model asset prices and calculate risk. Typically strong math / statistics background and excellent programming. Knowledge of products / assets 🔵 Quant Developer – a Quant Dev is a hybrid position between a developer and a researcher. They need excellent computer science background but also need to understand finance. Devs put into production trading strategies, build trading platforms or develop pricing / risk tools Thanks for reading and hope it helps. Please like ❤️ / share ♻ / comment 🗣 and it might reach someone that it really helps. If you’d like to discuss further please get in touch, would love to do so. #financialservicesrecruitment #hedgefunds #assetmanagement #quant #quantinvesting #investmentbanking #buyside #sellside #marketmaking #londonjobs #dublinjobs

Wow how is it September already?!! It seems every year keeps going quicker than the previous year. On a personal note having a baby in March has meant this year in particular has flown by! 🤣 At least the summer hasn't quite ended with what looks like a great week of sunshine ahead 😎. In terms of the Quant/Strat, QD/Tech, Quant Trading/PM market, it has certainly been a more challenging year for many firms, however we are still working with many places that are still actively looking for top talent.
