🔙 #TurnbackTuesday 🌟 #The51 In Action - Nourishing Communities in Times of Need 🌾 As the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives and livelihoods in 2021, SupportDDS & ZimWorX through #The51 was able to aid an organization called Chenga Ose Association. The51 stepped up to address the growing issue of food insecurity in this community. Recognizing the dire circumstances faced by many, our organization launched a vital initiative to provide food packs for those most affected. For 3 months, we worked tirelessly to distribute these essential supplies, ensuring that families had access to the sustenance they needed. This #The51 initiative was a testament to the power of community collaboration and our unwavering commitment to support one another during challenging times. Feeding America began as a modest effort in Phoenix and grew into a national force with 200 food banks and 60,000 programs, feeding over 40 million people yearly. Built on grit, it rescues billions of pounds of food waste, turning landfill-bound surplus into meals. It battles hunger stigma, champions SNAP benefits, and drives child nutrition policies. In disasters like Katrina and COVID-19, it’s a lifeline. Beyond relief, it attacks hunger’s roots with job training, community gardens, and mobile pantries for rural areas. Food insecurity affects every community in the U.S. Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study is a powerful tool to understand local impact and take action. We can leverage this data to address factors impacting food insecurity and unite to ensure everyone has access to the food and resources we all need to thrive. Some key findings from our most recent study include: 🔸 Food insecurity impacts communities in every county, parish, and congressional district in the U.S. 🔸 Child food insecurity rates can reach almost 50% in some counties. 🔸 Eight out of 10 high food insecurity counties are in the South, indicating regional disparities. 🔸 Rural counties disproportionately experience high levels of food insecurity compared to urban areas. Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap study is the only annual report that provides local-level estimates of food insecurity and food costs for every county and congressional district in the US. This year's study, published yesterday, shows the harsh reality that 44 million people face hunger, and that the amount of money needed to get the food families need to be food secure has reached a 20 year high. Did you know that September is #HungerActionMonth? 🍊 It’s a nationwide effort led by Feeding San Diego to raise awareness about hunger locally and throughout the United States to inspire action.   Nearly 300,000 people in San Diego County are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from.   Among the organizations addressing this issue and filling the void is #ProduceGood, a 2023 San Diego Foundation Community Food Grant Program partner. Goodr and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens have partnered to open a free grocery store in Fulton County to address food insecurity among elderly residents and low-income communities in a food desert. Located at the William Walker Recreation Center, the store provides essential groceries to families and seniors struggling with rising food costs. This initiative builds on Goodr's ongoing efforts, including partnerships with Atlanta Public Schools and nationwide programs to combat hunger. https://lnkd.in/gdWJuZ4z
