Manufacturers’ delays and unknown demand make being part of the #supplychain for promotions like these very challenging. Yes, Heinz has generated the Brand Awareness and the following behind them. But let's break it down regardless of this. 🚀 Play on words Barbieque is not only a brilliant pun but is still on brand for Heinz, which has made all the difference. Everyone loves a great play on words, but it hits the spot even more so when it remains on brand 👏 The same goes for jumping on every single trend. Unless you can do it well and in a way that relates to your brand, it's best not to 😬 🚀 Gap in the market Let me ask you this. Tell me where you have seen a bright pink condiment sauce. Okay, need I say more? 🚀 Time relevance When Barbie advertising was at its PEAK, Heinz jumped on the reactive bandwagon of showcasing Barbieque and Kenchup. Still, there was so much advertising going on that everything was gone and forgotten in a blur. NOW, they actually created the product when Barbie's mass advertising died down, and their brand has ALL the limelight. 🌿 💗 AND SHE'S VEGAN 💗 🌿 It is genius all around; congrats to everyone on the team! The feeling when a customer you thought may churn (or at least downgrade) is open to discussions with you, reviews various options, and then decides to renew on their current package for a 3 year contract. Quirky and sometimes controversial products can be a key pathway to expressing brand values. For example, Heinz is known to create unique and sometimes outrageous products like pickle-flavored Ketchup and "Hanch"(hot ranch). To celebrate Barbie's 65th anniversary, Heinz has paired up with Mattel to release Barbiecue Sauce -- or rather, pink barbecue sauce. 🎀 Consumers are having mixed feelings: some are disgusted by the color, others are eager that their kids will like it. Don't you love private label brand hyperbole? I've written before about my love of the Costco brand and in particular, all of the great products within the Kirkland private label portfolio. I spotted this Kirkland offering the other day and loved the over-the-top copy on the package. Three simple words: Super. Extra-Large (yes, counting this as one word given the hyphen) and Peanuts. Kirkland had me at Extra-Large. I'm not sure what the Super ads but I love that they put it on there anyway. I also noticed that the marketing team couldn't help themselves. They had to add Extra in front of crunchy as a modifier near the package bottom. They clearly got caught up in their own hyperbole. What do you think? TRICK? OR TREAT? Do you expect the products you buy to look like those depicted on their packages or in an advertisement? In a large number of cases, US courts rule that "ordinary" or "reasonable" consumers do not, due to a gigantic legal loophole known as puffery. Puffery includes "exaggerations reasonably to be expected of a seller" and non-specific advertising claims that reasonable consumers "do not take seriously." Back in October, for example, a U.S. District Court judge dismissed a class-action lawsuit that accused two burger chains of using advertisements that exaggerated the size of their beef patties, saying: The restaurants' efforts “to present appetizing images of their products are no different than other companies’ use of visually appealing images to foster positive associations with their products." While I could easily be wrong, my guess is this lawsuit filed against Hershey's will get thrown out, too. And, even if it doesn't, the $5 million in damages being claimed by plaintiffs would hardly dent the chocolatier's coffers. And that's the thing: Companies are rarely penalized for deceptive advertising except in cases where specific claims (e.g., "guaranteed to reduce your body fat by 22%") are involved. In essence, puffery protections give marketers the latitude to mislead consumers without being held liable for deceiving them.
