Supporting the cephalic response. The best way to support the cephalic response is to take the time to prepare food from scratch so that we maximise the sight, smell and anticipation of food. Preparing food from scratch also reduces the amount of processed food that we consume. Modern day pressures mean that this isn’t always possible and we need to find others ways to support the cephalic response. Do you eat a hurried sandwich at your desk? Is this UPF (ultra processed food)? I get asked this a lot and here is my “3 questions to ask to identify UPF”: 1. Can a professional chef recreate this in a kitchen? If the answer is no, then it’s probably because it goes through “a series of industrial processes requiring sophisticated equipment and technology”. Q: can you make a purée that is shelf stable for 2 years from your own kitchen? 2. Can you see any real whole foods inside? If the answer is no, it’s probably an indication of the processes involved in the breaking down and re-assembly of food. Q: why are ingredients “pea powder” instead of peas? 3. Are they marketed specifically for children? Admittedly this is more of a common characteristic than a defining feature of UPF, but I still find it to be a very helpful question to ask. Often times when you see something that’s super colourful with cartoons, they are pretty high in sugar / salt / fat and they tend to be UPF. Do you agree with my 3 questions? Can’t seem to stop binging post shift? Do you feel ‘out of control’ around food? Here’s a 3 tips that you can implement to break this cycle post shift👇🏻 1️⃣ Take a shower and get changed as soon as you get home 2️⃣ Prep some freezer meals to keep handy in case of a late shift or you really don’t want to cook. 3️⃣ aside from these points, eating a high protein breakfast can really help. I know you don’t feel like eating before shift but girl, you got to remember in healthcare we prepare for the worse case. Now you need to prepare for the fact you might not have a break. You need to fuel yourself for your shifts and not eating until 4pm isn’t going to cut it! Make sure you get at least 20-30g of protein in your breakfast and this will also help to avoid feeling ravenous at the end of the day 🙌🏼
