It is about how we feel at a particular moment and the perceived societal, cultural, and psychological messages others will receive. Since the launch of Sustainable by Jade, sustainability has always been a core value, reflected even in the business's name. From the outset, Sustainable By Jade was born with a simple aspiration: to inspire more people to embrace secondhand shopping and extend the life cycle of clothing. In the beginning, I sold any item of clothing I thought I would achieve a profit from - until I found my passion for vintage jeans. The abundance of unworn jeans worldwide made stocking inventory effortless. As my personal style evolved, a natural progression ensued, guiding the focus of the business toward items that resonated with my own evolving taste. This transition also coincided with an increase in our average sale price from £10 to £30. Jeans appeared to be the perfect product for continued business growth. As my knowledge of the textiles industry grew, through running this business and extensive research for my university dissertation on secondhand clothing consumption, my awareness expanded. I discovered the profound impact of synthetic fabrics, not only on our environment but also on human health. Learning about the harm caused by microplastic shedding during their lifecycle was eye-opening and frankly quite unnerving. It became clear that I didn’t want my business to contribute to these harmful effects. Consequently, within my shop, you’ll predominately find secondhand clothing and shoes made of natural fabrics like cotton, linen, denim and leather. I encourage shoppers to consider the fabric composition of garments before making a purchase, enabling informed choices for a more sustainable future.

Last year, we organised a swap shop at work, as part of our #greenmakers activities. Going through the donations, I remember feeling a bit underwhelmed. Not that people were not engaged and did not participate. But the quality of the clothes was so disappointing. So much polyester, so many items from fast fashion brands, which for some did not seem they would survive a few more washes and retain their shape, colour or texture. Interestingly, a lot of these clothes did not get swapped. The donations reflected the purchase behaviours that we know far too well when it comes to fashion. It’s high time to change them. The shift we need is for people to buy #secondhand more often, and when purchasing new items, to look at their labels, think about how long these items can last, and the impact their production and end of life have on our environment and on the workers of the fashion industry. Sustainability starts with each one of us. As individuals, we can make a huge difference in protecting our planet. Learning basic skills like stitching a button has stayed with me and made me more conscious of my impact on the environment. Now replicate the headline across all product categories, from... sex toys to bicycles bras to jalopies sofas to biros knickers to mobiles pans to paintbrushes candles to toothbrushes And you’ll realise that the whole use of the term #sustainability is a complete farse. Yes, a complete farse. As it’s a human excuse to carry on with an ever-growing continuum of waste. Yes, back to the headline. ‘Go to waste, each day.’ So, farmer Bob, is continually screwing more and more out of his finite resource, land, in a ‘supposed’ #sustainable way, just to feed our increasing waste. But land, has a finite amount it can give. Before it dies. So, what’s sustainable about that practice then? As #sustainability is a farcical excuse, dreamt up by humans, to feed their increasing wasteful habits. And frankly, no one can argue to the contrary. As true #sustainability, is making, transforming, summet, out of existing junk, to make summet new, without any processing. And no one can argue with that, either. Think about it, and discuss?
