Transforming Bendigo: Multi-Million Revamp of Stadium and Showgrounds Starts Now - Head Contractor sought! Big changes are on the horizon for Bendigo as the search for Head Contractors begins to lead the redevelopment of the Bendigo Stadium and Showgrounds. The designs for these prominent venues are progressing, with Expressions of Interest (EOI) now open for contractors ready to turn these plans into reality. Hannah Clement (whose an industry legend BTW!), Group Head of Civic Infrastructure at Development Victoria, noted that this EOI marks a significant step towards upgrading these facilities to serve the Bendigo community for generations. The focus of the tender process is clear: a commitment to utilising local talent and materials, which will help boost employment and economic growth across the region. The Bendigo Stadium will undergo a big transformation, featuring a new two-court annex, upgrades to existing courts, and utility improvements, including solar installations. New lighting for the outdoor netball courts and enhanced accessibility and car parking will ensure that the Stadium remains a top choice for indoor sports and local competitions. Visitors to the Bendigo Showgrounds can look forward to a new multipurpose pavilion, a redeveloped arena, and upgrades to entrances and fencing, enhancing its reputation as a prime venue for community, cultural, and agricultural events. #BuildingTalks #BendigoStadium #CommunityDevelopment

AFL Architects to help shape the future of the Portuguese National Stadium AFL Architects has announced its involvement in the proposed refurbishment of the iconic Portuguese National Stadium in Vale do Jamor, Lisbon. Following the official announcement from the FPF - Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and Ordem dos Arquitectos, AFL Architects is part of the winning team behind this transformative design, alongside Aires Mateus and gonçalves vieira _ cruz. The National Stadium, a Listed heritage site located near Lisbon’s city centre, is set to undergo a sensitive and innovative redesign. The proposal, which won first place in the 2024 competition, envisions a modernised venue that enhances the experience for athletes, spectators, and staff, with significant upgrades across its facilities. These changes will ensure the stadium continues to serve as a premier destination for football, rugby, and athletics, all while preserving its unique integration into the natural landscape. Honouring the Past While Designing for the Future The National Stadium’s integration within its topographical context is its defining feature and greatest uniqueness. Updating the stadium’s functional brief requires a return to this founding concept: seamlessly embedding the structure into the natural landscape of the Vale do Jamor. Respecting the site’s heritage through its topography is central to recapturing the essence of the original design. The proposed intervention delicately extends the stadium’s program into the slope, embedding new elements into the terrain while suspending the redesigned roof above the hillside. This new roofline harmonises with the central complex, including the Honour Stand and the Colonnades, creating a unified dialogue between architecture and landscape. The roof’s design draws inspiration from the influence of the original project, subtly merging with the surrounding topography and freeing the structure uphill. It reconnects with the natural terrain, framing the built heritage without imposing on it. This approach ensures the roof integrates into a continuous landscape gesture, avoiding artificial alterations to the land. The R&A have recently published with the support and assistance of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, the “Golf for Smaller Spaces guide” The guide has been written by experts in course architecture as a blueprint as to how courses can be developed and succeed in a non-traditional size and environments. We hope it will serve as a useful reference point for the industry as it responds to the way people want to play the sport and in locations, such as cities and urban areas, that are convenient to them. Creating versatile, compact golf spaces can attract new players, boost engagement, and strengthen our industry's connection to the communities we serve. Participation data indicates that 19.6 million adults outside of the US play golf exclusively on non-traditional nine and 18-hole facilities. The Golf for Smaller Spaces guide also highlights successful facilities from all over the world which are examples of best practice in small space design. Exploring ways to grow our game by making it accessible and enjoyable for more people is crucial to the golf community’s future and a strategic focus for the R&A and our Global Development focus with Federations. 🎭 2032 or 1932? Why Brisbane Olympics is a Laughing Stock! 🏟️ Brisbane’s plans for the smallest Olympics in over a century have been unveiled, sparking criticism and concern. The Queensland government's new images for the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC) show a modest 40,000-capacity stadium, starkly contrasting with previous Olympic stadiums like the Stade de France and SoFi Stadium. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Minimalist Design: The QSAC features just one permanent covered grandstand with temporary seats, leading some to label Brisbane a "hillbilly town." 2️⃣ Missed Opportunities: A global design alliance, including local Brisbane architectural practice Buchan, Nikken Sekkei Ltd, and HKS, Inc., proposed modern, sustainable "legacy building" stadiums built from timber and featuring blended greenery. These designs could have created iconic, distinctly Australian stadiums. 3️⃣ Government Decisions: Queensland Premier Steven Miles rejected a $2.7 billion Gabba redevelopment and instead opted for retrofitting existing venues. This decision has drawn criticism for missing a "once in a generation" opportunity to elevate Brisbane's global profile. 📝 Highlighted by HKS Director Andrew Colling, the proposed timber-rich designs could have featured a parkland observation deck and a cocoon of timber and sandstone, creating something uniquely South East Queensland and distinctly Australian. 🔗 Learn more about Brisbane's controversial Olympic plans and the alternatives that could have set a new standard: https://lnkd.in/gjdzQ738 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can cities balance cost constraints with the need to create iconic and sustainable venues for global events like the Olympics? To evaluate whether £400 million is a fair cost for building the 34,500-seat Casement Park stadium, we should compare it to other recent UK stadium builds. However, it's important to note that stadium costs can vary significantly based on factors like location, design, amenities, and local regulations. Let's look at some recent UK stadium projects for comparison: 1. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London, 2019) - Capacity: 62,850 - Cost: Approximately £1 billion - Cost per seat: ~£15,900 2. Everton's Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium (Liverpool, under construction) - Capacity: 52,888 - Estimated cost: £500-£550 million - Estimated cost per seat: £9,450-£10,400 3. Brentford Community Stadium (London, 2020) - Capacity: 17,250 - Cost: £71 million - Cost per seat: ~£4,100 4. Aberdeen FC's Kingsford Stadium (Aberdeen, planned) - Capacity: 20,000 - Estimated cost: £50 million - Estimated cost per seat: £2,500 Now, let's calculate the cost per seat for Casement Park: - Capacity: 34,500 - Cost: £400 million - Cost per seat: ~£11,600 Comparing these figures, we can see that the cost per seat for Casement Park is relatively high, especially considering it's not in London where costs are typically higher. It's more expensive per seat than the new Everton stadium and significantly more than smaller projects like Brentford and Aberdeen. However, there are some factors to consider: 1. Inflation: Construction costs have risen significantly in recent years. 2. Specific design requirements: The stadium might have unique features or constraints that increase costs. 3. Location challenges: There might be specific site-related issues increasing the cost. 4. Amenities and technology: The stadium might include state-of-the-art facilities that drive up the price. While £400 million seems high for a 34,500-seat stadium based on these comparisons, it's difficult to definitively say if it's "fair" without more details about the specific project. The cost does appear to be on the higher end of the spectrum for a stadium of this size in the UK, especially outside of London. Proves that Government advisors should review their advice.
