FirstWord Pharma covers clock.bio $5.3M seed funding. Startup secures $5.3M seed round to 'turn back the clock' on ageing clock.bio launched on Wednesday with $5.3 million in seed funding and a 140-gene "Atlas of Rejuvenation" to guide the development of therapeutics that can extend the healthy human lifespan and treat age-related conditions, like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Building on the discovery by co-founder and chair Mark Kotter, that forcing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to age triggers a spontaneous reversal of ageing, clock.bio has developed a cellular model of ageing that enables the team to decode previously unknown rejuvenation mechanisms. By using single-cell CRISPR screens, clock.bio has worked its way through the genome to uncover, "one by one, whether the knock-out or activation of specific genes had any impact on rejuvenation of iPSCs," CEO Markus Gstöttner told FirstWord. Last week, RegMed XB had the pleasure of joining an insightful event hosted by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine – reNEW at Leiden University.   Our Business Developer, Dominique de Jong, took the stage as a guest speaker, offering a thought-provoking talk titled 'Basics of Valorization and Why Industry Is Not the Devil'. In her presentation, she delved into the essentials of #valorization.   Other inspiring speakers who enriched the program were: Conor Simpson from Luris, explaining how LURIS can assist in creating impactful outcomes. Melissa Van Pel from NecstGen, delving into translational considerations for future cell therapy process development.   The event proved to be an engaging day aimed at informing researchers about tech transfer. Topics included, for example, what researchers can do to ensure that tech transfer remains a possibility, which forms of valorization are most common, and what influence that has on the position and freedoms of the researcher, as well as which steps researchers can take in a preclinical stage to ensure that a cell therapy can be translated into a GMP-grade protocol.   We're grateful for the opportunity to contribute and extend our appreciation to the ReNEW consortium for organizing this informative event. Previously associated with parasitic infections and thought to hinder cancer immunity, this response is now shown to positively correlate with sustained remission. The study employed samples from pioneering clinical trials, including a preclinical study in mice led by EPFL, and a collaborative clinical study in patients.
