🌳 Yesterday I helped plant 150 native fruit trees and 50 pines for windbreaks. Here's what I learned: 🐣 We are fortunate enough to be part of a community project with others who share our vision for improved food sovereignty and equity. Getting the trees to where they needed to be - and getting them in the ground - was an undertaking that really started this time last year ... we had been gifted 120 or so trees and had no idea what to do, how to do it, or what the results could look like. Things were radically different this year, starting from a careful choice of species and a transport approach including cars, a Greyhound, and a cross-city ride to get the trees to the land 🏋♀️ Then, as a team of committed volunteers and community members spent the day together on our land in McHenry County IL , we were able to find ways to solve problems as a team. You're not exactly racing the clock - the seedlings will last some days if carefully looked after - but we knew we'd only have a few hours on the day itself. In the end, the only trees that weren't planted have planned locations and will be in the ground very soon. 🤗 As Seq Solutions continues to grow, with buyer and supplier LOIs now in hand, we're building scale for not just 200 trees but many hundreds of thousands - millions, before too long. It's worth remembering, as we do this work, the toil that underlays it. Addressing #climatechange is community work, and understanding that can sometimes take getting your hands dirty - and working a meaningful relationship with the land itself. Cooperative living might look idyllic on paper, but intentional communities aren’t easy to sustain. It takes a hardy soul to weather all the monetary struggles, power imbalances, compromises with neighbors, and other complications that come with choosing this lifestyle. According to Diana Leafe Christian’s book, Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow Ecovillages and Intentional Communities, 90 percent of all ecovillages and off-grid communes are destined for early collapse. So how has Red Earth Farms, a 76-acre collective in the rolling hills of northeast Missouri, been going strong since 2005? Part of the answer comes down to elbow room. https://lnkd.in/g4BSxr3q

Not an expert but this article is insightful for beginners!!! Link: https://lnkd.in/gddkvMnj From the read: 🌱 For a tree-planting program to succeed, we need good ecological understanding, long-term planning, and follow-ups. 🤼 Focus on community engagement, addressing the underlying cause of deforestation and preventing unintended harms. 🤲 Transparency is a key factor -Encouraging transparency creates a safe space to share experiences, and learning from failure can help influence a culture where sharing data about both successes and failures is encouraged and valued. #forbeginners #treeplanting #reforestation #learningprocess

Back in business school, my favourite professor taught me an important concept - the difference between the approach of a Gardener, a Farmer and a #Forester. A Gardener plants for his own pleasure. A Farmer plants & harvests for his own profit. A #Forester plants for future generations! As the world grapples with environmental challenges, one of the major ‘root’ causes is our fast depleting tree cover. This made me recollect how exactly 15 years ago, I was fortunate to work with a group of like-minded, determined & energized volunteers to embark on a campaign to ‘create’ a new forest. A large barren area was witnessing significant soil erosion. In 2009, a small batch of 10 volunteers decided to make a difference and planted 100 saplings. The survival rate was poor. In 2015 we scaled up our campaign by attracting 200+ volunteers who helped plant 750 + saplings within a day, which was followed by careful nurturing and regular watering. Encouraged by the outcome, we executed more such campaigns in 2018 (100+ volunteers, 250 saplings) & in 2019 (130+ volunteers, 180 saplings). Recently on #EarthDay I revisited the site to witness nature's transformation - an organically growing urban forest, which hopefully will benefit all our future generations! #afforestation #socialresponsibility #climatechange #globalwarming #volunteering #nurture #mentor #transformation #scaleup #teamwork #green #gogreen

Advances and shortfalls in applying best practices to global tree-growing efforts "Abstract As global tree-growing efforts have escalated in the past decade, copious failures and unintended consequences have prompted many reforestation bestpractices guidelines. The extent to which organizations have integrated theseecological and socioeconomic recommendations, however, remains uncertain. We reviewed websites of 99 intermediary organizations that promote and fund tree-growing projects to determine how well they report following best practices. Nearly half the organizations stated tree or area planting targets, but only 25% had measurable, time-bound objectives. Most organizations discussed the benefits local communities would receive from trees, but only 38% reported measures of these outcomes. Nonprofit organizations with greater prior experience con-verged more closely on best practices, and their level of scientific expertise was positively associated with clearer project selection standards. Although many tree-growing organizations acknowledge the importance of clear goals, local community involvement, and monitoring, our results raise questions regarding whether long-term benefits are being achieved and emphasize the need forstronger public accountability standards." It’s been a pleasure meeting so many new faces at Trees, People and the Built Environment 5 with the Institute of Chartered Foresters. Many great conversations about The Woodland Trust’s Tree Equity Score UK tool, and many more conversations still to be had in follow up. I know I’m biased but I really think it’s a fantastic tool, not just because of the tree based data that it provides, but the bridge to looking at this in a human level. You see, tree equity is really about people, not just trees. It's about making sure everyone has access to the benefits trees offer, like cleaner air and cooler streets, no matter where they live. Some communities don't have as many trees, and that's not okay. Tree equity aims to fix this by planting more trees in places that need them most. Some communities may not have the time or energy to focus on trees while they're concerned with essentials like putting food on the table. However, once they realise that trees offer solutions not only to environmental issues but also contribute to physical and mental health, provide community fruit orchards, and support various other social factors, they can see that trees have a valuable place and purpose. When they are involved in the planning and decisions around planting in their communities, they are given a sense of stewardship. This can help shift our culture towards one that values nature more deeply. Tree equity works at all levels, grass roots up and top down so that we meet in the middle, in a place where everyone can enjoy a greener, healthier place to live.

Our ranch ecologist team Kala Eiring and Janét Moore were out at Durham Ranch in Wright, WY recently. They were working the Climate Smart program on one of the largest Buffalo ranches in North America at a whopping 55,000 acres! 🤯 The Climate Smart program ensures accessibility to all ranchers, regardless of background or scale of operation, through its open availability of grants, loans, and subsidies. Through collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector organizations, the program extends its reach and impact, fostering equity in sustainable agriculture initiatives. With a focus on personalized technical assistance and educational resources, the program empowers ranchers to participate actively, promoting inclusivity and diversity in climate-smart practices. 🦬 #TankaFund #BuffaloConservation #SupportNativeRanchers #WildlifePreservation #ProtectTheBuffalo #SustainableRanching #NativeAmericanHeritage #EcoFriendlyFarming #BuffaloFencingProject #ConservationEfforts #WildlifeProtection #SupportIndigenousCommunities #BuffaloRestoration #DonateForACause #WildlifeSupport #CulturalPreservation #IndigenousLandManagement #HelpSaveTheBuffalo #BuffaloHeritage #SustainableAgriculture #LandsLivesEconomies #Buffalo #Bison #TheReturn #NativeAmerican #ClimateRestoration #CommunityEmpowerment #EnvironmentalSustainability #BuffaloRanching #TankaImpact

Australian Minister for the Environment and Water at Australian Government | Authorised T Plibersek, ALP, Redfern.
Soon, farmers will be able to make money from restoring their land. The nature repair market will make it easier to invest in projects that help protect and restore nature, from tree planting to pest control. Pilot projects are underway on farms and properties across Australia to help shape the new market. Being able to put a price on healing nature will be a win for landholders, investors and the environment. https://lnkd.in/g5gdZkpR
Nature repair market could grow on-farm climate resilience, but depends on philanthropic funding
