It’s CSDDD day. This morning the legislative text of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) was published in the EU's Official Journal. Only last week we convened a group of sustainability professionals to discuss the implications. While it’s clear that the CSDDD significantly extends a company’s responsibility to cover impacts and risks in its supply chain, the legislation still has many open points that require interpretation. How far down the value chain can a company exert influence? How can it take ‘appropriate measures’, as per the text of the Directive, when the impacts are several tiers down the value chain? And how does a company know that it has done enough to address negative impacts? The discussion last week also highlighted that the CSDDD will have major spillover effects, that are often underestimated. The large companies subject to the regulation can only fulfil their due diligence duty by asking their suppliers and supply chain partners to share information, monitor risks and take action when needed. Companies should start anticipating these spillovers. Interested to know more? Find a full summary of the roundtable discussion here: https://lnkd.in/eB3KXd4J With thanks to Stephanie ter Brake!

Good read from Joel Makower over on Trellis Group about sustainability becoming a compliance issue as increasing regulations create a floor for minimum action on climate, packaging and others regulations. Is this good, or bad? In some respects, I think it is good that more companies will start measuring, understanding and improving their sustainability performance as a result, but sustainability compliance is boring and I fear it will hinder innovation as more companies check boxes for compliance rather than using sustainability to drive innovation with services, materials, and packaging that are better for people and the planet. Like it or not, the era of sustainability compliance has begun and the companies that embed sustainability into their culture and use it as a tool to drive innovation will be the winners as everyone else is busy "complying." #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #esg https://lnkd.in/euQDt6z9

Want to know more? Deloitte's Sustainability Regulation Outlook 2024 explores the most pressing developments and what these mean for business. ⭕ For example, #circularity is now a clear imperative. In 2024, companies should focus on understanding what #circulardesign means for their products and services, with EU regulatory initiatives establishing requirements for product design, packaging and packaging waste, the ability to repair products, and provisions on end-of-life waste disposal, among other things. The focus on circular design can also create opportunities for companies. For example, in sourcing secondary materials, designing products using other companies’ waste, and providing repair services. 🔗 Explore the full outlook here: https://lnkd.in/dvkm7FBM #sustainabilityregulation #RegulatoryChange #DeloitteInsights #sustainabilityreporting #circularity #supplychains #greenwashing #decarbonisation

Now, let's break down what this EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment is about..
Co-Founder and Partner at Thinking Beyond Business | Sustainability Consulting for Small and Medium-sized Businesses
Recently, we have seen an increase in consultations on the EcoVadis assessment. Even companies with reputable certifications, such as the B-corp certification, are being asked to submit this assessment. While many people believe it adds no value, I argue that the focus of this sustainability assessment and rating platform provides useful information for companies that have a genuine commitment to collaborating with their suppliers to create value and build more sustainable economies. Please see the article I wrote last year to learn more about this assessment.

Regulation is reshaping the economy and the cost of doing business in Europe. There are many moving regulatory pieces for companies to track as they navigate their own #decarbonisation path. And to be really effective, those regulatory changes need to to be joined up with business strategy, rather than being tackled only as a compliance exercise. When we launched the #EMEASustainabilityRegulationHub, this was exactly the analysis we wanted to bring to the industry. I am very pleased therefore to share our Sustainability Regulation Outlook report for 2024. Our ambition is to help companies respond more effectively to regulations coming down the track and to identify the opportunities that the regulatory changes create. There is a lot in the report. Dip into the topics of most interest. Use our analysis to cross-check your own understanding of the landscape. And reflect on the connections between different regulations and with corporate strategy actions. The report covers: - corporate sustainability reporting (#CSRD), which enters a decisive phase in 2024. - #circularity, where circular design needs to become the norm. - #supplychains, which needs to be made sustainable and resilient. - #decarbonisation, which is a multi-year project but with key areas to focus on in 2024. - #greenwashing, and what companies can do to avert the risks. Please get in touch if you want to discuss any of the topics, or let us know in the comments what you think.
