Here at The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS), we believe no family should go through childhood cancer alone. The NCCS focuses on the things that families need NOW, while their child is in treatment: • Travel-related expenses associated with treatment like gas, flights, and hotels. Because getting to their treatment is a priority. We spend about $62,000 each month to cover these costs for families! • Emergency financial assistance during long in-patient visits. This can assist with mortgage or rent, utilities, food, or any other household need. But our support goes even further: • Free publications and information during and after treatment. • College scholarships to childhood cancer survivors. • Worldwide support for childhood cancer patients: The Michele Hertlein Global Outreach Program partners with pharmaceutical companies to distribute donated cancer treatment drugs and medical supplies around the world. 📢 Genomics & oncology HCPs 🔊 It’s time to talk to children about cancer & hereditary risk I attended the Parenting with Cancer Conference, and the insights were invaluable. Huge thanks to Caroline @FruitflyC for her transformative work on facilitating tough conversations with families! Key takeaways: 1. Discussing cancer or cancer risk with children is tough but essential. 2. Starting the conversation is often the hardest part – guidance and reassurance are crucial. 3. Honesty is appreciated by children, who will ask questions, sometimes in unexpected situations. 4. Several organisations offer resources, support, and training, not just for parents but also for HCPs! This month, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has partnered with The Guardian to highlight the importance of #legacygiving to us. Last year #giftsinwills accounted for over one third of our annual income, meaning we simply couldn't make the progress we do without them. They also help us to future-proof the charity in a way that most other fundraising cannot. In short, they help us save lives. Amongst the various articles on the Guardian website, this one feels particularly close to home as a mother, I shed more than a few tears for Shona whilst reading it. But to honour her son with a legacy gift to us takes immense bravery in her grief. Knowing that Shona will not see the impact of this gift in her lifetime, but trusting us enough to know we will turn the dial on cancer research into the future, feels very powerful and has reminded me to ensure my will is updated in 2024. Traditionally, creating a will can be both time consuming and costly. To solve this, ACS is teaming up with Giving Docs to provide free access to a suite of estate planning essentials. The suite is now available for cancer patients and survivors and includes a guide on creating a free will and a durable power of attorney. The tools can be accessed safely and securely on cancer.org or GivingDocs.com/cancer. In addition to a will, patients and survivors can access resources for beneficiary designation – as well as advance healthcare directive. There is no obligation for users to make a charitable contribution when accessing the tools.

Without access to the right medicine and supplies, entirely treatable conditions can quickly become life-threatening. Cancer patients can be especially sensitive to treatment delays. In the heart of #Lebanon, amidst crises and challenges, the Kids First and ALAM associations stand as beacons of hope for children battling cancer. Through the touching story of Nadia, a brave young girl who overcame Hodgkin's lymphoma, we witness the power of timely medical intervention and the miracles of modern medicine. Nadia's journey from diagnosis to recovery is a testament to what can be achieved when resources are available. However, not every child is as fortunate as Nadia. Lebanon faces unprecedented challenges that are severely impacting healthcare services and access to essential treatments. Kids First, founded in 2005, aims to bridge this gap, ensuring that every child receives the chance to fight cancer. Yet, with the surge of crises in recent years, their resources are stretched thinner than ever. The cost of treating a child with cancer averages $60,000 - an unimaginable sum for many families in Lebanon, especially without the support of social security or third-party payers. Kids First association is now burdened with the full cost of treatments, medications, and hospitalizations for the majority of the young patients. The situation is dire, but there is hope. At ALAM, we have made it our mission to help the Kids First association with the cost of treatment of as many children as possible.
