LIVE FROM ROUTES EUROPE: Michael Stanton-Geddes, Director of Economics & Competition at ACI EUROPE, delivered a keynote address during Routes Europe 2024 in Aarhus, Denmark, discussing the latest trends currently impacting the European aviation industry. ✈ He highlighted the uneven character of air traffic recovery across Europe. While overall traffic nears pre-pandemic levels, only 44% of airports have fully rebounded. Southern & eastern Europe are seeing a stronger growth, indicating a shift in traffic flows. The market is transforming due to increased seasonality, a focus on international and leisure travel, and consolidation towards aircraft with a smaller passenger capacity. 📣 ACI EUROPE joins over 400 cross-sector organisations in a collective call on EU leaders to confirm the Green Deal as a strategic priority for the next EU mandate.   The EU Green Deal is the foundation of a competitive, secure, modern and efficient Europe. As such, it must be underpinned by EU industrial policy supporting its implementation. EU airports are bound by a number of requirements for their infrastructure to meet the ambitious goals enshrined in the Green Deal, and they now need the stability and supporting measures to deliver on the transformation. This means, the EU Green Deal needs to be reconfirmed as a key strategic priority for our bloc by the new leaders assuming their office this year and complemented by a sound EU industrial strategy to support it. Moreover, the European aviation stakeholders are ready to start a closer cooperation with the institutions shaping their sustainable and competitive future, notably the European Commission, to establish an EU Pact for Sustainable & Competitive Aviation, fully aligned with the EU Green Deal objectives. On the 80th anniversary of the Chicago Convention, the aviation industry has come together to deliver a joint declaration to ICAO, reaffirming its commitment to advancing safe, secure, and sustainable growth for international aviation. This historic declaration, signed by key industry associations including ASA—recently officially recognized by ICAO as an international organization—celebrates decades of collaboration and innovation that connect 5 billion passengers, 33% of global trade by value, and 58% of world tourists every year. Fabio Gamba, Director General of ASA World, emphasizes: “As we blow out the 80 candles on ICAO’s cake, we make a wish for continued collaboration that has made aviation the safest transport mode today. Always a pleasure to address L'Union des Aéroports Français (UAF) on European market & policy developments - at their Annual Congress today in Paris. Truly difficult times for our French airport members. They were already burdened with the costs of security/State activities for which they are not fully compensated and with a regulatory framework that does not recognise their investment needs. But they now face plans from the Government to squeeze its aviation sector with up to €1 billion in additional taxes - which will over time destroy much more value than the semi-quick fix it would bring to the State budget… Unprecedented political instability also means no clear vision & strategy for the very sector that supports its massive tourism industry - with decarbonisation remaining a daunting challenge. All these issues were addressed heads on by UAF’s President Thomas Juin along with Nicolas Notebaert | VINCI Airports and Augustin de Romanet | Groupe ADP. And I must say it was difficult to find reasons for hope in the (nice) words from François DUROVRAY, the Minister in charge of transport. Great to also have our own Sébastien Colmant | ACI EUROPE giving an update on where we stand with another headache: the failed deployment of EDS C3 - the “new” cabin bag screening technology that was supposed to allow passengers to carry Liquids, Aerosols and Gels without any restriction…

The ACI EUROPE RACE 2023, hosted in Dubrovnik, focused on navigating post-COVID challenges under the theme "Navigating Change." Discussions emphasized the disparate recovery rates between larger and smaller regional #airports, with larger ones outperforming in passenger traffic while smaller ones remained significantly below pre-pandemic levels. Key topics included the sustainability drive towards net-zero emissions, the integration of new technologies like electric and hybrid aircraft, and the challenges of adopting sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF). The conference highlighted the crucial role of state aid and the importance of flexible revenue streams amidst economic and geopolitical pressures. THE PARTS IATA CANNOT REACH IN MAKING AIRLINES MORE SUSTAINABLE AND CUSTOMER-DRIVEN IATA made a number of interesting recommendations for the new European Commission. But in line with competition regulation it cannot address the role of airline pricing in enabling customers making more emission-friendly choices for their journeys from Origin to Destination. New European Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas and colleagues, may be the only authorities to address this ‘elephant in the room’: Find a (new) balance between sustainability and competition by regulating that airlines can not price longer, circuitous and higher-emission transfer-journey options lówer than shorter direct/non-stop and lower-emission journey-options. In line with the DMA/DSA regulations, which also apply to BigTech from outside the EU, this proposed regulation can also apply to non-EU airlines that want to do business from, to or within the EU, and hence ensures a level playing field.
