Big thanks to Supriya Panchangam and Rohan Subash - turns out, saving the planet is just as fun as it is crucial. The certificate? We are bringing back artefacts from a fair and sustainable future.   I loved last week's Sustainability Accelerator Unconference at Chatham House. It was a bold, caring and hopeful event where we looked at what a fair and sustainable future looks like and what it would take to transition towards it. My session was loosely inspired by the #futuresthinking approach "#Afrorithms from the Future”. I invited the participants to reclaim their #IndependentThinking and embrace their imagination. We used three steps: 1- TENSIONS We leapt into the future, listed and discussed as many “Tensions” of the time. We realised that everyone had different ideas, nuances and assumptions about important things like stress, pollution, violence, disposable resources, race… 2-INTERSECTIONS Each participant then gave 2 points to the tensions they found most drawn to. The majority chose: Axis X: more Earth Time (nature time prevails and "manages us" more than clock time) Axis Y: less violence (felt, perceived, seen, statistical or managed…) 3-ARTEFACTS We stopped at the intersection of these tensions and created artefacts. These included: " An Earth clock that helps us live and harmonise through Earth time not clock time" " A mask that connects us to our ancestors' wisdom" " A formalised fair and peaceful interface to make decisions" " Boxing gloves that protect and comfort" " A moneyless society based on trust, interdependence and inclusion" " Songlines that reduce violence and help us live in harmony with nature"   🎨 Check these artefacts (loosely interpreted) in the film below. 😃 Over to you! - What name would you give them? - What do they evoke? - If you were to use them today in 2024, what would you accomplish? - Are they reassuring, or triggering? Ask yourself, are you really working on the great challenges of today? With this question the team of zero360 GmbH and UN Global Compact Netzwerk Deutschland initiated the first meet-up of the SDG Innovation Accelerator Program in Berlin this morning. After an insightful day of brainstorming, learning and networking with sustainability-interested professionals from different industries the Proske team around Janina G., Katarzyna Matuszczak and myself, has deep-dived into the topic sustainable development in the event industry and chosen a major challenge that we’ll tackle over the course of the program: The responsible production of event materials. From planning over production, life cycle extension and end-of-life management of event materials there are many areas where we see an immense environmental impact. Every event includes different event materials, produced by different suppliers and designed for single-use, aligned with the theme of the event, which often eliminates the chances for an extended life cycle. An impactful solution that can be applied to all our in-person events is required. Will we find a solution for this key challenge of the event industry and lead the way to waste-free events? It's been a week already since we hosted the third edition of our annual inspire event. We look back on a wonderful afternoon filled with lots of food for thought. Over the next few weeks, we will dive into some of the key insights of our event. Today, we'll be starting with the key insights from 🌍 Christine Boland 🌍's Zeitgeist analysis. Fragmented times & human needs: Christine highlighted how our current era of division and intolerance necessitates a meaningful response from brands and individuals. Addressing these issues can create significant impact. Christine's Principles of Progress: - Step back, reflect, and guide: encourage reflection, create value from values, and prototype possible futures. - Facilitate meaningfulness: build bridges, raise awareness, and promote conscious consumerism. - Join the symbiocene: shift from sustainability to thrivability and embrace symbiotic concepts. Current vs. emerging systems: Christine contrasted our current extractive, ego-centric system with an emerging mutual, regenerative, eco-centric approach, emphasizing unity and social cohesion. Existential challenges: discussing AI and its consequences, Christine stressed the need for a shared, eco-centric narrative that respects diverse perspectives. Future consumer landscape: understanding and adapting to trends is crucial for businesses to remain relevant. Christine posed critical questions about consumer drivers and skills needed for the future. Strategies for brands: link brand purpose to shifting consumer needs through workshops, trend reports, innovation sessions, and strategic consultancy. At our recent Curiosity Forum, "Curious About Sustainability" on 4th December, I had the privilege of joining an incredible panel alongside Wendy Gardner and Brad Peirce.    Together, we delved into the theme of Curious About Individual Sustainability. It was a thought-provoking discussion about how we, as individuals and organisations, can embrace curiosity to drive sustainable change—not just for the planet, but for ourselves.   We live in a system that’s under immense pressure. Burnout, modernised problems, and fractured relationships are common challenges in both work and life. During the panel, we shared how curiosity can be a powerful tool to navigate these challenges. When used effectively, curiosity helps us: ✅ Open up emotional and creative mindsets. This is key to adapting to change and finding new solutions. ✅ Focus on our span of influence. Sustainability doesn’t have to start big—individual actions can lead to collective impact. ✅ Take time to think. In our rush to control everything, we often lose the space for reflection. Yet, it’s that space that leads to meaningful action. We also spoke about the importance of self-care. As Wendy shared, “Your job is to love yourself—which can be hard to do.” But self-care is critical if we’re going to lead change. We can’t help others or create sustainable systems if we’re running on empty.   One of the most exciting parts of the discussion I found was the role of curiosity in helping us move towards a regenerative world.By shifting from a mindset of control to one of curiosity, we can unlock new opportunities for innovation and connection. As Brad noted, “We need the skills to navigate the change needed to work towards a regenerative world.”   These conversations align closely with what we explore on The Curious Advantage—how curiosity enables us to tackle complex challenges in new ways. This discussion has left me feeling inspired, and I hope it does the same for you.
