📣𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Children's Parliament supported the engagement of children from across Scotland in their second phase by inviting their Children’s Human Rights Defenders on a three-day residential to build their own imaginary town, which they called Confidence Kingdom. Matt Yglesias’s essay celebrating the breadth of pro-housing interest groups could by extension be my corollary advice to pro-transit advocates. As political issues, both housing and transit have the (potential) advantage of drawing on backing from across the ideological spectrum, with different groups supporting the cause for different reasons, and adding up to the majority needed to win elections or influence policy. Winning better transit means taking advantage of those opportunities to grow the coalition. Transit advocates should resist calls to take positions or impose litmus tests for membership based on issues unrelated to transit. It’s a strength that diverse groups can come together as a pro-transit coalition while setting aside disagreement on other issues. The important syllable in e pluribus unum is “bus.” Environmentalists support transit for its clean air benefits, while labor unions support transit for the construction jobs it creates, but those two allies for transit are opponents on the issue of building LNG port terminals. Church-based faith groups and health care organizations might both support transit because of the mobility it provides their constituents, but disagree about the Dobbs decision and reproductive health rights. Business organizations and worker organizations are both able to support transit expansion, while continuing to disagree about the proper minimum wage for fast food restaurant employees. Social justice groups may want to cut the police budget, while bus drivers just as adamantly ask for the police budget to be increased, but both can agree on the need for more transit, period. And, as Ygelsias suggests, people can have strongly opposing views about Israel and Palestine without that disagreement splintering a movement that is focused on getting better transit here at home. Expecting all members of a pro-transit coalition to adopt uniform views on Israel-Gaza, reproductive rights, LNG plants and other non-transit issues is counter-productive to the one common goal of a pro-transit coalition: winning better transit. Winning in politics requires building coalitions, and a relentless focus on the issue the coalition is designed for. That issue for pro-transit coalitions is simply, “better transit,” for the whole wide variety of different reasons that transit is good for society as a whole.  https://lnkd.in/eatEqYUq
