Paris is reminding the world of its beautiful and rich culture through the Olympic games this summer. Hosting the Olympic games is an opportunity for each country to showcase its best and newest sites and engage newcomers and tourists in the city. This year, instead of taking a new approach to buildings, Paris reinvented its existing sites to host spectators and athletes. For anyone visiting Paris this summer its important to note which public sites have been transformed into sites for the Olympics and which projects have had restorations worth seeing. The Eiffel Tower has public space that will be reinvented to host wrestling competitions on the lawns adjacent to the tower while the open air space under the tower itself will be used as grounds for the volleyball competitions. The Place de la Concorde is a historic public plaza, where the victory of World War I was celebrated, that will host several sports competitions creating a new cultural experience to remember. The famous Palace of Versailles, a UNESCO heritage site, is a perfect site that will be used for the equestrian and pentathlon competitions. Restorations have been made within the Palace and grounds to host spectators and a new reception area has been built in the gardens to help facilitate the events. Roland Garros Stadium is the home of the French Open and will also host the boxing and tennis competitions. The Esplanade des Invalides is a large green space adjacent to the historical Parisian Hotel des Invalides and will host the archery and para-archery competitions. As the Paris 2024 #Olympics is ongoing, it's worth examining whether hosting such mega-events truly benefits a nation's brand and economy. Jose Filipe Torres, in his book Nation Brand Builders (page 48), provides a critical perspective on this issue. Enjoy the read: ——— ARE THE OLYMPICS AND OTHER BIG EVENTS WORTH IT? Global events are great opportunities for countries to change their image. At least, countries seem to view them as great opportunities. The Olympics always create a lot of controversy and get a lot of press. Everyone wants to host them and be part of the games, especially during the medal ceremonies. That's because countries believe the Olympics really boost their image as a nation. For example, in looking at the Olympic Games, you will see that countries systematically spend millions of US dollars to get the chance to host the event. Clearly, some very powerful people think that ben in the world spotlight for two weeks will have a major impact on their reputation and economy. But are the Olympics really good for countries? Do they create a long term impact? Sho answer: most of the time, it's a No. Personally, I don't believe that the Olympics are a great investment. PARIS 1900: “THE FARCICAL GAMES” 😳 As the clock ticks down to Paris 2024, let’s look back at what happened the first time around and hope that things go better this time… It was only the 2nd-ever instalment of the modern Olympic Games, so perhaps it’s not so shocking that the Paris 1900 Olympics were a little disorganised. Later dubbed “farcical” and “an absurd anachronism”, the Games got off to a bad start by being stuffed inside a bigger and more established event – the 1900 Exposition Universelle (or World’s Fair). Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic movement and IOC President, hoped that attaching the youthful Games to this better-known event would raise their profile. His tactic backfired. The Olympic competition was relegated to sideshow status. Spectators, officials – and even the athletes themselves – were often unaware that they were participating in the Olympics. Unsurprising, as most events were bafflingly labelled “International Contests of Physical Exercise and Sport” – no mention of Olympics. No opening or closing ceremonies were held. There was such confusion about schedules that few spectators or journalists were present at events; the press that did report called them "International Championships", "Paris Championships", and "Grand Prix of the Paris Exposition". Despite the poor marketing, almost a thousand athletes from 24 countries took part in 95 events. France – fielding 72% of all athletes – won the most gold, silver and bronze medals (although back then athletes received cups or trophies rather than medals). De Coubertin is reported to have commented later to friends, "It's a miracle that the Olympic Movement survived that celebration". Just saw an American business say they're pulling their ad spend from the Olympics because of the opening ceremony. Then I noticed the most liked reply to Emmanuel Macron's account describing it as a "satanic demonfest". All because the opening ceremony had a couple of scenes that were a little risqué. What were people expecting? France literally invented the word risqué. They also created cabaret. Presumably these same people wouldn't watch Moulin Rouge? Personally think Paris have nailed the Olympics so far: 1. Opening ceremony was unique in that it wasn't stuck in a stadium. 2. Unapologetically showcased the values that France is all about (Liberté etc.), while also covering their history (Marie Antoinette) and successful companies (Louis Vuitton). 3. Kept it under budget! The lowest cost Olympics in the 21st century. We need more of this. For comparison the UK went 4x over budget! 4. Didn't create future wasteland Olympics Parks by using existing infrastructure as much as possible. 5. Used it as an opportunity to improve the environment (e.g. clearing up the Seine). 6. Celine Dion sang on the Eiffel Tower. This felt like something out of a Bond movie. Totally spectacular. 7. Spread out the benefits with surfing in French Polynesia, sailing in Marseille, handball in Lille, football in Nice etc. What did you think? Were you appalled or delighted? Paris 2024: Olympic Games Overshadowed by National Ego and Organizational Failures The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are passing by without much fanfare, overshadowed by the brilliance of previous editions like Barcelona 1992 and London 2012, which were celebrated for their modernity and elegance. The initial excitement of reviving Olympic grandeur has been eclipsed by what seems to be an excuse for the French national ego to flourish unchecked. From the very first day, the "woke culture" festival took over the event, shifting the focus from the real protagonists, the athletes, to the city, the River Seine, and other unrelated exhibitions. What should have been a celebration of sports turned into an excessive display of Parisian grandeur that only the French seem to appreciate. Throughout the event, we have witnessed a series of organizational blunders that highlight the difference between ambition and capability. France appears to be struggling with the challenge it set for itself. The desire to take on too much has resulted in a lackluster and poorly managed event, falling short in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. Hopes now rest on the United States for the next Olympic Games, with the expectation that they will host a more universal event, less centered on exaggerated patriotism. The international community looks forward to the next host restoring the Olympics' shine and significance, while Paris 2024 serves as a lesson in the dangers of prioritizing national ego over the true spirit of sportsmanship.
