My latest article for BBC Travel: Want to see the Maldives’ famous “Sea of Stars”? Well, it might not be as straightforward as you think! My editor let me get stuck into some myth-busting over whether THE “Sea of Stars” really exists, what it really is, and how you can increase your chances of seeing A “Sea of Stars”…Spoiler alert - the clue is in the adjective! That’s right, there’s more than one “Sea of Stars” and it can pop up ANYWHERE where there is bioluminescent plankton (which just floats around the ocean and is not attracted to any islands in particular) contrary to the myths that persist! However, some islands will offer more optimal viewing conditions than others and there are some tips and tricks you can follow to try to find it - such as by going night snorkelling - and I explain why, when and how in my article. Huge thanks to marine biologist & wildlife presenter Lauren Arthur for helping to set the record straight once and for all on this incredible phenomenon! I’ve been itching to write this story for years, ever since images of a glowing beach in the Maldives went viral and I started reading all kinds of crazy things about it that I knew couldn’t be true. Does it exist? Yes, but not in the way you may have been thinking! Click the link or go to BBC.com/travel to find out more! Social & Environmental Responsibility | 10X Entrepreneur | Travel & Tech | Advisor & Board Member | Early-Stage Investing | Activist & Futurist | Let's challenge the status quo!
Maintaining wildlife in their natural, wild state not only benefits biodiversity, but it frequently turns out to be the most advantageous option economically as well. A study by the National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas project and the University of California, Santa Barbara found that each shark in the Galápagos is worth about $5.4 million over its lifetime, thanks to interest from the booming diving and tourism industry. A dead shark, in contrast, only fetches about $200 to the fishermen. Marine-based tourism supports more than a third of all jobs in the Galápagos Islands, bringing in $178 million per year. https://lnkd.in/d4VH-THs

Celebrated for its sun, pristine beaches and natural beauty, Queensland still lives up to the playful tourism slogan it earned in the late 1990s: “Beautiful One Day, Perfect the Next.” One of the northern state’s most prized assets is the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral ecosystem and a Unesco World Heritage site since 1981. Approximately half the size of Texas, the vast 130,000-square-mile reef is home to more than 900 islands, 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and, unfortunately, a growing list of endangered sea creatures.

Please 🙏🏻 help Julie Bindas, Christopher Fisher 🎥 and their team in this important and urgent matter. I know Lewis Pugh would be very interested in this Julie. 👉🏻 The greed to boost luxury travel in Costa Rica is destroying at an unprecedented growth rate the beautiful rainforest and our pristine oceans. Developments, hotels, Resorts and marinas are being built in every corner possible. One such development, a luxury resort and Marina is being built in this whale 🐳 heritage site Nursery of the humpback whales, in Golfito, located inside the Golfo Dulce. Exploitation of this phenomena of nature under the guise of protecting the whales goes against International laws set in force to protect natural heritage sites. This major development will destroy the delicate ecobalance of this Whale Heritage site. We are raising our voices for the whales to stop this devastating encroachment on their sacred Bay. Our mission is to bring worldwide attention, scientific data and halt this marina in its tracks. This movement will not only benefit our corner of the world but also be an example throughout the world to those countries facing the same problems. Funding is necessary to achieve our goals https://lnkd.in/e6-JQVyz #savehumpbackwhales
