Nephrocalcinosis, or calcium deposition in the kidney, can be a complication of congenital hypothyroidism and is fortunately very rare thanks to newborn screening. I’m happy to share my publication in Pediatric Discovery of a case of nephrocalcinosis and congenital hypothyroidism, with insight into the mitochondrial mechanism behind this potentially overlooked causal relationship. Many thanks to Lina Quteineh, Paloma Parvex, Caterina Marconi, Prof. Valérie Schwitzgebel, and Massimiliano Bertacchi for this collaboration.

https://lnkd.in/gk59tmF4 Article title: Duodenal Eosinophilia and Gastroparesis: Is there a role? Author(s): Sharareh Moraveji; Mohammad Bashashati; Ben Alvarado; Irene Sarosiek; Alireza Torabi; Richard McCallum Journal: Archives of Clinical Gastroenterology Journal ISSN: 2455-2283 Abstract Gastroparesis (GP) is a disorder that affects the motility of the stomach resulting in delayed gastric emptying (GE) without mechanical obstruction and has accompanying symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, early satiety, bloating, and epigastric pain. It was reported that increased eosinophils were identified in the first part of the duodenum in a subset of patients with the entity of functional dyspepsia (FD) and the main symptom of early satiety. It is recognized that approximately 40% of FD patients may also have delayed gastric emptying, termed Idiopathic GP (ID-GP). Therefore, to investigate the hypothesis that duodenal eosinophilia may be present in patients diagnosed with ID-GP we investigated whether there is any evidence of increased numbers of duodenal eosinophils in patients with the diagnosis of ID-GP as compared to diabetic GP (DM-GP) patients and controls who had a normal GE. #DuodenalEosinophil #FunctionalDyspepsia #Gastroparesis #GastricEmptying #DiabeticGastroparesis #IdiopathicGastroparesis #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer

https://lnkd.in/gDTV-7cR Article title: Continue peritoneal lavage in acute pancreatitis: How do peritoneal cells response? Author(s): Mariana Barreto Serra; Denise Frediani Barbeiro; Heraldo Possolo de Souza; Marcel Cerqueira César Machado Journal: Archives of Clinical Gastroenterology Journal ISSN: 2455-2283 Abstract: Continuous peritoneal lavage is part of a set of minimally invasive techniques, called the Step up approach. These techniques have been used in the management of acute necrotizing (severe) pancreatitis (SAP), as they remove toxins and reduce serious metabolic disorders, although their effects on mild acute pancreatitis and on the content of peritoneal cells during mild and SAP are still unknown, since inflammation is an important factor in the progression of the disease. The peritoneum is a tissue with important immunological functions, and the characterization of peritoneal cells during acute pancreatitis can be a relevant strategy to understand the mechanism by which peritoneal lavage has worked during clinical practice, as well as to uncover possible pharmacological targets. This review presents an approach to minimally invasive techniques in the management of AP, emphasizing peritoneal lavage and its nuances. #AcutePancreatitis #StepUpApproach #PeritonealCells #PeritonealCavity #PeritonealLavage #InflammatoryBowelDisease #FunctionalGIDisorders #GastrointestinalAndLiverDisease #DigestiveOncology #GastrointestinalSurgery #PediatricGastroenterology #ColorectalCancer #PancreaticCancer #HepatocellularCarcinoma #GastrointestinalBleeding #Endoscopy #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #SurgicalGastroenterology #StomachUlcers #VirtualColonoscopy #GastricUlceration #RouxenYGastricBypass #GastricAcidSecretion #GastricMucosa #GastricUlcerHealing #GastricCardiaCancer #ReproductiveEndocrinology #EndocrineDisorders #Hepatology #AlimentaryCanal #PancreasCancer

A systematic review in the Journal of Clinical Medicine showed adults and children with sickle cell disease with the HbSS genotype had an elevated risk of developing acute pancreatitis compared with the general population. "Future studies should also determine the risk factors for AP in patients with SCD because there might be unique risk factors such as increased incidence of gallstone disease and ischemic injury due to repeated sickle cell crises," researchers wrote. Source: Minerva obstetrics and gynecology A recent study used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze urinary steroid metabolome in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study found differences in glucocorticoid and androgen metabolism among different PCOS phenotypes, which correlated with the clinical manifestations of the disease. The study also highlighted the secondary role of polycystic ovarian changes in patients with non-classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH), which is associated with prolonged adrenal hyperandrogenism. These findings are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of hyperandrogenism and determining appropriate management strategies.

🎙Amplifying the voice of Pharmacists & our Profession. Audio branding nerd. Suffering from microphone & corgis fetish. RxPodfather.
Cystic Fibrosis is caused by mutations in the #CFTR gene, which result in defective or absent CFTR proteins that regulate salt and water movement in and out of cells. This leads to the buildup of thick, sticky mucus, especially in the lungs and digestive system. CFTR modulators target the underlying protein defects to improve function, which can significantly enhance lung function, reduce pulmonary exacerbations, and improve quality of life for pediatric CF patients. Several CFTR modulators have been approved for use in #pediatric patients. Pediatric #Pharmacists like Lisa Lubsch (Bimpasis), PharmD, BCPPS, AE-C, FPPA, ensure proper dosing, monitor for drug interactions, and counsel families on adherence and potential side effects to optimize therapeutic outcomes for pediatric CF patients. Our hosts of the "Pediatric Pharmacist Review" Justin Cole, PharmD and Marry Vuong PharmD BCPPS with Perfecting Peds have a great discussion on this topic.
