Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games is a major undertaking (and risk) for the host city. At a time of cost-of-living pressures and constrained government budgets, host cities need to run a tight ship – communities are unlikely to tolerate major budget overruns and leftover venues infrastructure that goes unused or falls into disrepair post-Games. However, as shown by the sheer incalculable joy of the Paris Games so far, the event is surely worthwhile. I've written a short piece about the IOC's recent focus on running a more sustainable, cost-effective Games, the need for each venue's post-Games use case to be top-of-mind for host cities, and taken a quick (parochial) look at how often some of the world’s most famous entertainment venues (including the mighty MCG) are used 🏟 #paris2024 #olympics #stadedefrance #MCG

The news stories around the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 are coming in thick and fast now and it starts to feel like a very different media world compared to the last Olympic Games. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was dramatically affected by Covid and this really transformed what people did during Games time, including what was shared or not shaed. The media world has also shifted since Rio 2016 and there is a new creator community that is driving audience awareness during this year's Games. Twitter or X isn't as prominent as it was then and we have TikTok dominating some of the campaign spaces online. The International Olympic Committee – IOC has also put digital audience experiences squarely in the frame and this year's Opening Ceremony will be a great example of that. I'm very grateful of the ongoing support from The University of Salford for this work and its wider continued support to my Olympic research career since 2014!
