Hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games is a major undertaking (and risk) for the host city. At a time of cost-of-living pressures and constrained government budgets, host cities need to run a tight ship – communities are unlikely to tolerate major budget overruns and leftover venues infrastructure that goes unused or falls into disrepair post-Games.
However, as shown by the sheer incalculable joy of the Paris Games so far, the event is surely worthwhile.
