hydroelectric power is a renewable source of energy that generates power by using a dam or diversion structure to alter the natural flow of a river or other body of water. Hydropower relies on the endless constantly recharging system of the water cycle to produce electricity using a fuel water that is not reduced or eliminated in the process. There are many types of hydropower facilities though they are all powered by the kinetic energy of flowing water as it moves downstream. Hydropower utilizes turbines and generators to convert that kinetic energy into electricity which is then fed into the electrical grid to power homes, businesses, and industries. Q: How can #hydropower owners and operators show proof of #efficiency improvements? A: Through independent testing of turbine-generators.  Our team has a long history of conducting field flow measurements, reaching back as far as the 1930's with the development of the Allen Salt Velocity flow measurement method. Today, we integrate our field performance measurements of #turbines and #pumps with modern data acquisition methods using various code-accepted methods of flow and power measurement—keys to realizing #funding provided by the Hydroelectric Efficiency Improvement Incentives (Section 243 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005). Ever wonder how hydropower is generated? Since this month is the 40th anniversary of KRCD’s hydroelectric power plant, we thought we’d use this opportunity to teach you how the Jeff L. Taylor Power Plant produces clean energy! 💡💧 Coming from the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Kings River fills Pine Flat Reservoir and flows into the hydroelectric turbines through large diameter pipes (technically called Penstocks; in our case each unit has a 13.5 feet diameter penstock) into our power plant. That flowing water puts pressure on the turbines causing them to rotate as it passes through. As a result, a generator connected to the rotating turbine produces electricity! To operate the hydroelectric power plant and produce electricity, KRCD holds a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. Obtained in 1979, this FERC license expires in 2029, but KRCD staff are already preparing to renew the license today to continue operating the power plant without interruption for decades to come! #Hydropower #KingsRiver #PineFlat

Hydropower fuels our grids with clean, renewable energy. But over time, output from turbine-generators can decrease due to age, wear, or material fatigue, and new units can outshine their aging counterparts with better overall performance. And as we all know, repairs, upgrades, or replacements don't come cheap. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐨 𝐡𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 It is often mentioned that in some countries, or continents such as Europe, hydroelectric technology has now reached its maximum installed capacity, both due to the lack of new heads to be exploited, but also in the face of socio-political issues that do not facilitate the construction of new large plants. In the last decade/twenty years there has been a very competitive race in search of available heads, with a great scouting activity by large organizations but also by private individuals. In my opinion, the future of continuing to exploit hydroelectric technology is played out on two fronts: 🎯 repowering existing plants to restore or increase their efficiency; 🎯 concentration on mini, micro, pico hydroelectric. Regarding this last front, we hear more and more often about new technologies such as hydrokinetic turbines. ⚠️ Their operating principle is similar to wind turbines, with a maximum efficiency which, in compliance with the Betz limit, cannot exceed approximately 60%. 👉 In this regard, one might ask why not focus more on a type of technology that provides an efficiency level of up to 80% or even more, such as the wheels of old mills. hydro can be turned into peaking power source by quadrupling it's output and only running it 0 to 6hour a day during demand peaks. the good news is there is no need to increase storage by raising dam walls and the downstream channel can easily accept the 4 times normal hydro operation volume of water without flooding. The reason is river channel's capacity is typically an order higher than current hydro discharge volumes. The main engineering challenge is to build the additional penstocks turbines and expand to the substation and also reconductor the transmission to handle the additional load. This cost should be a lot less than expanding the storage volume of the dam. There may be opportunity also to include some pumped storage capability by adding a downstream poundage and making the new turbines capable of pump mode operation This is what a battery of the nation could look like #energy #renewables #pumpedhydro #hydro #innovation

As today’s hydroelectric facilities age and become more expensive to maintain, our nation risks losing a major source of clean energy and well-paying jobs. Through the Grid Deployment Office’s Hydroelectric Efficiency Improvement Incentives, the U.S. Department of Energy has selected 46 hydroelectric projects to receive up to $71.5 million in incentive payments to increase the generation efficiency of the existing hydropower fleet. Fifteen of those projects are in the Northeast, across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. With $16.5 million in incentives, these projects aim to: - Upgrade generating units to increase reliability and efficiency - Upgrade trash rake systems to better remove debris - Increase average hydropower plant efficiency by more than 14% - Bring more than 270 #CleanEnergy jobs into communities Learn more about these facilities and how they plan to continue providing clean, affordable electricity to their communities: https://lnkd.in/eqB8bfvn #Hydropower

Hey #CleverFlickers, ever wondered where your electricity comes from? ⚡️ Here's the lowdown on our main source of electricity in Aotearoa: hydro / hiko ā-awa! 💧 Hydro generation works by damming water from a lake or river so that when the water is released, it's driven down a pipe and over the blades of a large turbine with such force that it causes the turbine to spin. The turbine is connected to a generator, which converts the turbine movement (kinetic energy) into electrical energy. The water then flows straight out into a river below. In 2022, 60% of our electricity was generated from hydroelectricity – an awesome stat, as hydro is renewable and produces no carbon emissions 😍 Here in Aotearoa, we currently have over 100 hydroelectric power stations.
