For the seventh straight year, #OmniRewild was pleased to help Studio Gang with plant identification for their annual #greenroof #bioblitz. This #OmniMeadow has been managed to maximize #biodiversity and is home to dozens of native plant species including several new arrivals in 2024. Experts in insects, birds, fungi, and bats also lent their expertise on a gorgeous summer day in #Chicago

Fraxinus ornus cilicica is a plant species native to Anatolia and is an important endemic. Surveys conducted with drones in the aerial breeding trial area can be crucial for understanding the population and genetic diversity of the species. Such field studies are of great importance for plant conservation and biodiversity. Drone-assisted aerial surveys were conducted in the endemic Fraxinus ornus cilicica breeding trial area.

IT'S W🌍RLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY 2024‼️ Theme: The importance of insects for migratory birds The World Migratory Bird Day campaign in 2024 will focus on the importance of insects for migratory birds, and highlight concerns related to decreasing populations of insects. Insects are essential sources of energy for many migratory bird species, not only during the breeding seasons but also during their extensive journeys and greatly affect the timing, duration, and overall success of bird migrations.

Phylogenetically diverse wild plant species use common biochemical strategies to thrive in the Atacama Desert ($) Dussarrat et al found biochemical convergences characterized by reactions enriched in at least 50% of the Atacama species, pointing to potential advantages against drought and nitrogen starvation, for instance. These findings suggest that the adaptation in the Atacama Desert may result in part from shared genetic legacies governing the expression of key metabolic pathways to face harsh conditions. 🦉 The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a widespread species found across open habitats, including grasslands, prairies, and marshes. 🍂 It is known for its distinctive, rounded ears and mottled brown plumage. The species typically measures about 33-43 cm in length with a wingspan of 84-102 cm. 🐭 In terms of diet, short-eared owls primarily prey on small mammals, such as voles and mice, which make up about 80% of their diet. 🌍 Their breeding population varies significantly, with estimates suggesting a global population of around 2 million individuals. ❄️ Short-eared owls are migratory in northern parts of their range, moving south during the winter months to find more favorable hunting conditions. 🎥: MukulSoman #ShortEaredOwl #Owl #Birds #Wildlife #Nature #Biology #Conservation #Earth #Biodiversity #Environment #LebaneseACT

One thing I love about nature is that every little organism interacts with many others! Such as specific fig wasps species that pollinate specific fig tree species. In our latest article Roberta Hedberg shows a great example of gall midges breeding in specific figs getting parasitized by specific wasp species :D are you still following? This tiny beetle is a scarab beetle, most likely Melinopterus prodromus. They feed on all manner of herbivore dung and I think his mission on this old trackway was probably related to rabbit poo. This is just one more piece in the puzzle of why maintaining a grazing regime in heaths, downland and ancient pastures/commons is so important. The dung does not just recycle nutrients for plant use. That only part of the story. The dung is food for a plethora of specialised invertebrates and a substrate for many "coprophilic" (poop loving) fungi. It's described as fairly common but seems to have a stronghold forming a line east from Wales through the Midlands and on to Breckland in East Anglia, with apparently few recent records. It is almost guaranteed to be excluded from areas of intensive, non organic animal agriculture where the wormers fed to stock will kill or severely alter the behaviour of any coprophilic species. Charnwood Lodge NNR March 16 2024 on an old track. #entomology #ecology

New paper out @AvocettaJournal! Three species laid their #eggs on the same nest. Crazy!!🤯 Probably not so much. We report an unusual mixed-species clutch among #Avocet, #LittleTern and #CommonTern in #NEItaly 🥚🥚🥚 First-attempt breeding individuals or limited suitable nesting sites the possible reasons. Have you ever seen a mammal take flight? Meet the Indian Fruit Bat, also known as the Flying Fox. Bats are unique as the only flying mammals. The Indian Fruit Bat, one of the largest bat species, boasts a wingspan of up to 1.5 meters (5 feet). These remarkable creatures primarily feed on fruits, nectar, and flowers, playing a crucial role in pollination and seed dispersal within their ecosystems. Unlike many other bats, they do not use echolocation but rely on their keen eyesight and sense of smell to locate food. Social by nature, they often roost in large colonies that can number in the thousands. With a lifespan that can exceed 30 years, the Indian Fruit Bat is one of the longest-living bat species. #dbcbiodiversity #deltabluecarbon #indusdelta #biodiversity #wildlife #conservation

Today is #BatAppreciationDay and we should recognize the importance of bats around the world. Bats benefit us in many ways such as eating many insects that carry disease and those that destroy agricultural crops. They help pollinate many plants that may not exist if it was not for bats. Bats also help spread vegetation and create new forests by spreading seeds from the fruit that they eat. Life would not be as we know it if bats did not exist! #animal #bat #bats #batfact #batconservation #batresearch #biodiversity #chiroptera #conservation #echolocation #ecology #ecosystem #endangered #environment #flyingfoxes #habitat #lovebats #lovewildlife #mammals #megabat #megachiroptera #microbat #microchiroptera #nature #news #newsalert #research #savetheanimals #savethebats #savetheplanet #sustainability #wildlife #Yinterochiroptera #Yangochiroptera
