According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's annual Point-in-Time Count, the number of unsheltered individuals has increased. The count happens each January. In 2023, more than 653,000 individuals faced homelessness, a 12% increase from the previous year. Community Action Agencies throughout #MN continue to decrease the number by providing prevention services, rental assistance, financial coaching, transitional housing and even permanent affordable housing to clients. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that declares there are no constitutional protections for individuals who are unhoused facing sweeps, even when there is no shelter or housing available. Our neighbors can now be fined by simply existing in public spaces. As a nation, we are making survival harder for those living on the streets. Issues like substance use, mental health, and budget constraints are often linked as the main causes. Data has shown this to not be true, it is simply a lack of #housing that is the true cause. #Houselessness is solveable. Continuing to marginalize people is never the solution and is only perpetuating the cycle of houselessness. As a #community, each of us possesses the power to make a difference. Breaking Barriers: Empowering Street and Homeless Children for a Better Tomorrow! On this International Street Children Day, let's shed light on the realities faced by these resilient young souls. While 'street children' and 'homeless children' are sometimes used interchangeably, there are important distinctions between the two. Not all homeless children live openly on the streets; many find themselves in hidden circumstances, such as sleeping on floors or in temporary accommodations like hostels. Shockingly, in 2018, around 9,500 children in the UK spent Christmas in hostels or temporary housing, often facing cramped living conditions and sharing facilities with strangers. Join us in raising awareness about this issue and providing essential support to empower street and homeless children. The Dsquared Homes for the Homeless GAP program assisted our 100th client with rent today! I'm extremely proud of this initiative, which came about from my son being denied temporary housing over a $40 income shortage I wasn't allowed to cover. He lived in Kiwanis Park for one year, and though I fought hard, he never received help. My motto is, "Don't TALK about it, BE about it' because it's more normal to complain about what someone else ISN'T doing (especially the government) than it is to look at ourselves and figure out how WE can make a difference. I founded this nonprofit to assist those experiencing a temporary setback with rent, and it's exactly what we've done without help from the government. I don't believe in excuses, and complaining about what the government wasn't doing, certainly wasn't helping my son when he lived in the park. Dsquared Homes for the Homeless is recruiting an Administrative Assistant (we always need a Fundraising Director) whose role will include representing Dsquared in Zoom meetings with our community partners. My preference for the Admin Position is someone who is retired or only works part-time because they will have the flexibility required for this role. Although we do not have monthly meetings (most of us work while volunteering with Dsquared), we are known well enough that businesses reach out to support our mission through their organizations regularly. This volunteer MUST be a self-starter but does NOT need to live in Arizona as the entire role is supporting us with Admin duties, and representing us on Zoom calls. Events like the Kentucky Derby contribute to an increase in the number of homeless encampment clearings in the Louisville region. This escalation adds to the vulnerability, unpredictability, and psychological distress experienced by displaced individuals without homes. While many clearings necessitate a 21-Day Warning, they can be expedited if deemed an "emergency", requiring only a 24-hour notice. These sudden displacements result in the loss of personal belongings, including important documents, and make it challenging for service providers to locate and assist clients during this period of heightened instability. Lack of support + Lack of resources + Crisis = #homelessness Yesterday #SCOTUS heard oral arguments in #JohnsonvGrantsPass, from which a decision could inform how the law impacts people who are living on the streets. No matter where you land on the issue, please consider: What if you were on the streets? What about your kids? What about your sibling or cousin? Parents? Would you be more motivated to "do something about it" then? I know there are the offenders and those that are manipulating or gaming the system, and that everyone makes decisions that lead somewhere... but that's not everyone that you see on the streets. The reality is that we're ALL a couple of steps away from losing everything and ending up there. In light of this, I'd like to encourage a few responses... First, the next time you see someone on the streets, reflect on your own heart posture towards the image-bearer whose story you don't know. They are of equal value, dignity, and respect, and we need not hold a position of pride or contempt in looking down on others whose circumstances are different from ours. Instead, consider a response of empathy, compassion, and partnership to know and help them. Second, if praying is your thing, please pray for the outcome of this decision, those advocating for human rights, and the people who will be impacted. Third, if you have any influence, which you do, consider speaking up in your local context, volunteering somewhere to help, donating to organizations that are doing amazing work already, and lending a hand to your neighbor. There are lots of people doing amazing work both locally and nationally (see short list below). The harvest is plenty, but the workers are few. This is a major crisis of our day. The only way for progress to be made is through holistic collaboration within communities for the betterment of all, from social services to housing. The poor will always be among us, but that doesn't give us a license to be apathetic until "the problem" is on our doorstep.
