The job switching trend that emerged during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be over, new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week shows. The number of employees changing jobs fell to just 8.0 per cent in 12 months to February, which is back to around levels typically seen in the five years leading up to the pandemic and a marked drop from the 9.6 per cent recorded for the year to February 2023. It’s a similar story over in the US, where many workers are complaining about feeling stuck in their jobs. As a result, companies are creating new opportunities such as letting them apply for temporary positions on other teams, working in new cities for a few months, and expanding some roles to provide new challenges. As we kick off the new year, it is interesting to note that a recent study has found that a significant number of UK workers are considering a change in their career path in 2024. Indeed, a fifth of employees have expressed their intention to seek new job opportunities over the course of the year. This trend highlights the importance for employers to focus on talent retention strategies, as well as for job seekers to carefully consider their options and career aspirations. 📈 With this in mind, it is crucial for companies to pay attention to employee satisfaction and engagement in order to retain top talent and drive business success. On the other hand, job seekers should take the time to reflect on their career goals and seek opportunities that align with their skills and aspirations. As a recruiter, I believe it is essential to facilitate meaningful connections between employers and candidates to ensure a mutually beneficial match. 🤝 In light of these insights, it is evident that 2024 will be a pivotal year for the job market in the UK. "The job market in Australia is indeed challenging!" Many professionals we speak to are finding it increasingly difficult to navigate. Despite an unemployment rate of around 4.1%, which typically indicates a candidate-driven market, we're not seeing the expected job-hopping or bidding wars for talent. Here are some key factors at play: *Pandemic Hiring Surge: Employers hired heavily during 2021 and 2022, often at inflated salaries to secure the needed talent. *Remote Work Flexibility: Candidates enjoyed unprecedented flexible work arrangements, often working from home. Current Employer Trends: 1. Cost Control: Companies are now tightening costs and showing reluctance to pay inflated salaries. 2. Refined Talent Requirements: Employers are focusing on a very close fit in experience, skills, and attitude. 3. Work Culture Balance: There's a shift towards finding the right balance of flexible work to enhance work culture and productivity. Current Candidate Trends: 1. Preference for Flexibility: Candidates still prefer flexible work-from-home arrangements. 2. Salary Expectations: Many are looking for higher salaries that were more realistic 12-18 months ago, and they are for more cautious about moving. 4. Competitive Vacancies: There is increased competition, with a greater number of applications per vacancy. In this complex market, both employers and candidates need strategic guidance. SUMMER IS UPON US in the UK So, are we going to see a major slowdown in Recruitment over the summer months or will it continue to build? The election is over, the cost of living needs to come down and finally see interest rates dropping but no one has a crystal ball. The smart clients are going to continue to hire over the summer months, because they get a bigger pool of good candidates that will provide a step change for them in September. We see this happen every year. When they do this, it’s never an easy journey as people involved in the process slip away for a week here and a week there looking for sunshine and it often elongates the hiring process, but persistence and staying power is needed to stay the course to offer and acceptance. The same can be said for candidates, we all have so many things to deal with on a daily basis and everything has its season. So is it a good time to be looking at finding a new role or is it you don’t have the bandwidth until September. LinkedIn research shows that 75% of UK professionals are looking for a new job in 2024. Employees across the UK are feeling stressed and burned out, prompting them to reassess their expectations from the workplace and employer. While pay increases may not always be feasible in times of economic challenges, these insights emphasise that supporting employees’ work-life balance will be a crucial differentiator for businesses in 2024 amid the ongoing war for attracting and retaining top talent.” So, a salary increase is often the reason to change jobs and gain more money to cope with the cost of living, but more people are looking for a better ‘work life balance’ that they don’t have in their current role. As the economy gains a positive momentum over the next 6 - 9 months the talent war will increase and we are likely to move back to a candidate market, so getting those needed people onboard as early as possible will be a necessity for most clients. So just because it will be challenging to hire over the summer due to people being away on holiday, my advice is perceiver.

Employee Experience Consultant covering three main area's of the employee acquisition, onboarding and retention.
I wanted to share some incredible statistics from the Ciphr survey, which make interesting reading. Incredibly, new research shows that more than a quarter (26%) of UK workers are looking for new jobs this year due to ongoing cost-of-living pressures. Within the past six months, 15% have already taken the plunge into new roles, highlighting a dynamic shift in the employment landscape. It's noteworthy that over half (53%) of Gen Z employees are on the lookout for better-paying roles, underlining the pressure on young workers. This is especially pronounced among Londoners, where a staggering 37% are 'actively job hunting'. As a recruiter, it's vital to understand the implications of these statistics. With sectors like sales, consulting, and hospitality experiencing the highest job-seeking rates, it's clear that industries are facing significant churn. For employers, this calls for a robust strategy to handle attrition and attract new talent. Retention isn't about just offering higher wages; it's about improving the overall employee experience. Initiatives that focus on work-life balance, career development, and a positive company culture can make a big difference. My strategy in the face of this change and reorganisation, has several key points: ✅ Engage directly with employees to understand their needs and concerns. ✅ Implement flexible working hours and remote work options where feasible. ✅ Foster an inclusive and supportive company culture. ✅ Offer clear career development plans and continuous learning opportunities. ✅ Maintain transparent communication between all levels of the organisation. ✅ Plan a replacement strategy for inevitable leavers. What strategies are you implementing to adapt to this evolving job market? Share your thoughts in the comments! 💬💡 #Recruitment #Hiring #TalentAcquisition #gifting #loyalty #rewardandrecognition #incentives #giftcards #customerloyalty
