The second panel in Fortifying Farmer Finance was Protecting Producers: AgInsurTech solutions to safeguard livelihoods at scale, which was moderated by Priya Kumar. The speakers in this panel were Dr. Kolli N Rao, Sarathy Srinivas, and Dr. Ajay Verma. Perception about insurance products has remained negative among rural India, as they feel that premiums are collected promptly but claims are always an issue. Farmers prefer credit products over insurance, and lenders perceive insurance as an overhead adding to the cost of capital rather than a risk mitigation tool. The panel today collated all the steps involved in changing the perception among all the stake holders: - Designing insurance products that cover 80-90% of the concerns of the farmer - Ensuring appropriate and timely claim processing - Identifying and rejecting wrong claims to keep the cost of insurance in control - Convenient and quick onboarding process - Offering access to all farmers, including tenant farmers. They felt that achieving these goals requires a long list of data- and technology-enabled solutions, along with collaborations with ecosystems to gain farmer trust. 🌾 Transforming Agriculture with Digital Innovation! 🌾 At TradeVibe Bangladesh, we’re excited to highlight an inspiring new initiative in our agri-finance ecosystem. iFarmer, in collaboration with United Commercial Bank PLC and Visa, has launched the Farmer Card—a pioneering cashless payment solution for farmers across Bangladesh. The Farmer Card empowers farmers to safely manage transactions, track purchases, and buy essential agricultural supplies from iFarmer Centers without carrying cash, reducing both hassle and risk. This initiative was launched in Chuadanga, where 17 farmers received their cards, with a plan to distribute them to 150 farmers initially and expand nationwide. As Muhaiminul Hossain, Head of Product Management at iFarmer, stated, this project marks a significant move toward financial inclusion and resilience in the agricultural sector. With support from UCB and VISA, this partnership aims to create a more sustainable, digitally-enabled future for farmers.
