Have you ever gone on a date wearing shabby clothes and a bad haircut? Imagine this: You spend a good amount of money to get professional photos taken. Then, you pay for a PREMIUM membership on a dating site. You even invest extra in marketing to get dates faster. And then, you show up for the date looking like Will Smith in his first interview in Pursuit of Happiness. Unless you can charm your way through like Will Smith, you've just wasted all that money on marketing. No one in their right mind would do that, right? Yet, this is exactly what many Omni-channel brands do. They focus heavily on ads, spending millions of dollars, only to lead their favorite customers to a poorly optimized Product Detail Page (PDP). No compelling images, no bullet points, no reviews—just a lackluster experience. Why would anyone purchase? Here’s the reality: Many brands treat content optimization as a “nice to have” rather than a “need to have.” And the stats don’t lie: ⚫ 78% of brands report focusing more resources on retail media than PDPs. ⚫ Only 25% update their PDPs for seasonal changes. ⚫ 58% of brands have PDPs SEO-optimized at product launch. ⚫ Hiring for PDP-focused roles is trending below retail media hiring. ⚫ 55% of brands aren’t even testing how to apply GenAI to their PDPs. I'm an Amazon brand strategist, and I'm tired of seeing half-hearted work. I might make some enemies with this post, but it needs to be said: too many brand strategists don't do the deep technical work that's necessary for Amazon success. I've lost count of the number of accounts I've seen where brand strategists manage the account for the sake of doing so. - They don't check the data. - They don't look for patterns. - They don't dive deep into reporting. - They don't test and experiment with new strategies. And they wonder why the account isn't hitting its KPIs. The problem is that Amazon is constantly evolving, and what worked last year won't necessarily work this year. Brand strategists who don't keep their finger on the pulse of the platform are doing their clients a disservice. If you're an Amazon brand strategist, I implore you: do the deep technical work. Get your hands dirty in the data. Test new strategies. Keep up with the changes Amazon makes. Don't be a lazy strategist. 19 things that destroy a #DTC brand: 1. Blind focus on acquisition and “funnelz” 2. Over-reliance on one marketing channel (see: Meta, 2021) 3. Over-reliance on one sales channel (Amazon, Shopify) 4. Over-reliance on VC funding 5. Hiring too many senior people out of big established traditional brands thinking you are getting ballers 6. Hiring too many junior “Facebook gods” to lead your marketing 7. No budgets or forecasts 8. Looking at ROAS over ROMI (what's ROMI? link in comments) 9. Blind focus on “incrementally” of marketing campaigns over the big picture of brand, product, and distribution (see: deck chairs, Titanic) 10. Focus on tactics > strategy 11. Ignoring supply chain, demand planning, and inventory financing 12. Not engineering successful retail store launches (see: ShopDrops, link in comments) 13. No OKRs, no accountability 14. No building a customer list 15. No nurturing that customer list (see: lifecycle marketing) 16. No sense of contribution margin or CLV vs. CAC 17. Culturally living inside a bigger company 18.
