How do you vet a recruitment partner? Seek one who is truly consultative and diagnostic, rather than an order taker. Some firms will just run with your job description and send resumes, hoping for the best. 👎 Recently we had project manager we placed at an architectural millwork firm that didn’t work out. Instead of simply refilling the position, we asked for a diagnostic call first to refine our strategy. Over 45 minutes, we explored their organizational structure and the pressures they faced. Turns out their PM's were managing the production schedule (in their in house shop) AND the install schedule for their field crew... for many projects at once. They were spread thin. We found that the real need was for someone to manage shop production exclusively, freeing up the existing PM's time to manage a higher volume of installs. In less than a week we had a Shop Foreman start with them that had over 15 years experience in millwork. While this solution strayed from "the way they'd always done it" - it has proved highly effective. A great recruiting relationship involves being open to new ideas and feedback, and embraces innovative solutions from partners who understand diverse industry practices.
