In rheumatoid arthritis, quantitative outcome measures have long been available and consistently used for improvement and state of disease activity (ACR responses, SDAI, CDAI or DAS28), whilst comparable parameters for worsenings of the disease- flares- are lacking to date. We recently mapped patient anchors on the SDAI and CDAI scale, in two independent real-world cohorts, and thus propsed such quantitative definitions for flare in RA. https://lnkd.in/dDBBSTYj The cutpoints have also recently been validated in two independent French cohorts (Avouac et al, ARD 2024). https://lnkd.in/dpkVWbZM

HOW ARE AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES DIAGNOSED?Blood tests can be helpful, but often do not hold the complete answer. The most common blood test first ordered when an autoimmune disease is suspected is the antinuclear antibody test, otherwise known as the ANA. There are dozens of other tests, most of which involve the immune system, that try to detect autoimmunity. Blood tests are only part of the workup, and by themselves do not give a diagnosis. Many people have a positive ANA, but have no autoimmune disease (referred to as testing falsely positive.) Other patients might have conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, with normal blood work (referred to as testing falsely negative.) Can you get Rheumatoid Arthritis by not Flossing Regularly? The answer is : Porphyromonas Gingivalis and that it’s just that complicated. https://lnkd.in/eBFHb7eZ. Chronic periodontitis affects a staggering 1/3 of the adult population worldwide, making it the most common inflammatory disease. Recent studies have shown a link between periodontal disease (PD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as both display systemic markers of inflammation and share an association with HLA-DRB1 alleles and chronic inflammatory pathways (Äyräväinen et al., 2017). Interestingly, PD is much more frequent in RA patients compared with healthy individuals. These findings highlight the importance of oral health in overall health and the potential for managing PD to improve RA outcomes. #periodontitis #rheumatoidarthritis #oralhealth #inflammation

Today is Rare Disease Day, a global movement aimed at raising awareness and understanding of rare diseases and their impact on individuals and families. With approximately 300 million people worldwide living with rare diseases, this day is a reminder of the unique challenges they face in diagnosis, treatment, and everyday life. MAC Clinical Research has worked on a number of clinical trials for rare diseases and conditions that affect fewer than 1 in 2,000 people such as Sickle Cell disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), and Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency. We should also take this opportunity to recognise the tireless efforts of carers, researchers, and healthcare professionals dedicated to supporting people living with rare diseases. With greater awareness and collaboration, we can work towards improving access to treatments, advancing research, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for those affected by rare diseases. Current treatments are not adequate for many people with moderate to severe Rheumatoid Disease. 3. Rheumatoid Disease manifests itself differently in each person and even in the same person over time. 4. RD research is severely underfunded in the US at a bout 1/12 the per patient rate of similar diseases. 5. Rheumatoid Disease is often an invisible illness. 6. Early, aggressive treatment has been shown to produce the best outcomes. 7. Remission is rare. Daily Pain is not. #TheRealRD
