🌿 Learnings from PharmaPack: Sustainability in Pharma and Packaging 🌿   Attending PharmaPack last week, I was encouraged to see that sustainability was a key focus for nearly half of the exhibiting companies. In a challenging week for global climate news, it was encouraging to witness businesses stepping up and demonstrating leadership by prioritizing resilience and sustainability.   Here are my top 3 takeaways from the 1st day of the event: 1️⃣ Integrate Sustainability from the Start: Bayer’s message was clear: “Improving a product's sustainability after it’s on the market can cost more than integrating it from the start.” Designing with sustainability in mind from the beginning not only lowers long-term costs but also fosters innovation, keeping pace with evolving regulations, buyer expectations, and patient demands. 2️⃣ Collaboration & Engagement Drive Progress: Achieving sustainability requires collective efforts across the value chain. Notable examples of collaboration include: ·        Bayer & Liveo Research: Developing recyclable PET blister packs. ·        ReMed™ Initiative (Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Sanofi & Merck): Aiming to recycle 25% of injection pens in Denmark through partnerships with recyclers. ·        Pharma LCA Consortium: Standardizing methods to assess the environmental impact of pharmaceutical products. Insights from other industries can also inspire action. For example, the Sustainable Packaging Initiative for CosmEtics (SPICE) brings together 30+ members to co-create methodologies and tools for sustainable packaging in cosmetics. 3️⃣ Lead Through Action: Pharmaceutical packaging faces unique safety and regulatory hurdles, but these challenges shouldn’t delay action. Companies that take the lead now—despite temporary exemptions like PPWR delays for primary packaging until 2034—can reduce compliance risks, establish benchmarks, and drive industry-wide sustainable change.   💡As sustainability becomes central to pharma and packaging, prioritizing early integration, fostering collaboration, and leading with implementation will create meaningful, lasting impact. #Sustainability #PharmaPack #CircularEconomy #Innovation #Collaboration
